NAV2015; 2-tiers; Hyper-V; active/passive clustering?

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

We are moving from NAV2009 to NAV2015, not a large instance --maybe 10 dedicated NAV client users.

We are fine running 2-tiers - SQL/NAV on same server, with web frontend for the those that enter info from a web form.

Clustering the web tier should be no problem.

But I'd like to add a level of higher availability by clustering the SQL/NAV servers using Hyper-V in primarily an active/passive (or AlwaysOn or whatever it's called now) mode.  Could it be as simple as setting up Windows Server Failover Clustering on the two VMs that will have the SQL/NAV software (assuming the proper shared storage for the DB)?

I've seen the NAV Network Load Balancing clustering video but that is 3-tier.

I doubt I'm the first to have thought this might be a good thing to attempt...

Regards,

--Doug

    I like this guide: technet.microsoft.com/.../jj863389.aspx

Thank you both for taking the time to respond and your insights.

I 'inherited' the existing system where NAV 2009 server and SQL DB are on a single server.

The MS Dynamics developer page also has an example of "Installing the Three Tiers on Two Computers" where NAV2015 server and DB are on a single computer, hence I considered combining those on the new server.

What I'd like to think the benefit of clustering will be is continuation of NAV2015/SQL services in the event of a failure of the running node (Failover) even if that requires a user to re-establish a connection.  This is what used to be called Active/Passive. Also to allow for patching with migration of running services to failover node, then patching, theoretically minimizing downtime.

We probably have 3-4 concurrent NAV Client connections and then less than 200 web users entering data once a day.

If running the DB on one set of failover clustered VMs and then NAV 2015 Server sw combined with the web server on another is the way to go, I'll look at it.

Any reference examples or whitepapers you can point me to?

I'm with Dirk! I recommend you to put the IIS and the Service tier (for example) together, and on the other server put the DB.

The best choice for you depends on your needs (about high availability and load balancing). You can set up a failover cluster with Hyper-V, use SQL AlwaysOn feature, etc.

Can you describe us your environment (number of concurrent connections, etc.).

    Regards.

    Hi,

You can either do a Network Load Balancing, a Windows Server Failover a Hyper-V Failover Cluster or a SQL Server Failover Cluster (and some other specials as well). NAV is a 3 (+1) tier solution. Client tier, (IIS), service tier & database tier. Except of the client tier each one could make sense. So consider what should be the result. In any case it's not a good choice to put service tier & database tier on one server. So where exactly are you facing issues and what do you want to improve in availability?

I guess technically this should read "3-Tiers on two Servers." But hopefully you get the idea.  :{)
