RFI: Looking for a dynamics AX opinion ( pre sales)

We are currently running an old vb6 application suite for our whole operations,

We find this unstable at best and stopping our growth,

We are a construction company size 200+ admin 700+ employees, with manufacturing / transport / hr / accounting / estimating  cost/suppliers/etc / BIM autodesk / Revit designs / Servicing / Project Management needs.

Would AX 2012 R2 or 365 Cloud be a good solution for our fit ?

What is a ball park figure of pricing for all modules enabled  rounded up for software / integration in terms of $/hour avg min hours to implement.

and especially support for product, either via partners or direct.

We wouldnt want to be caught up in a situation where no one can design/help in a case, like we are now.

We are Canada Based, this would obviously need to have french as a main language

The version which you should be looking at is AX 2012 R3, if you have an internal system engineering and networking team to manage your hardware and software infrastructure, such as the domain and Active Directory. If you want to be in the cloud, you would need Office365 accounts in combination with Azure AD, which might require to migrate your existing infrastructure if it is already not like that.

I have implemented a large manufacturing customer before, and at the time AX 7 was not yet available. We would still have done it on the older, on-premise platform, since we had many distributed locations on 3 contintents, where AX should be able to talk to local production machinery in a very fast manner. If you do not need such integrations, D365fO might be a good choice, otherwise consider remaining with the on-premise product version (AX 2012 R3).

You will not be able to get any figures like this, that would require fit-gap analyzis and sizing, i.e. we do not know what is the distribution for your concurrent users, who needs advanced or basic licenses, how many connections would you use for third-party integrations, etcetera.

There are AX partners in Canada for sure, but I do not think you would easily find French native-speaking resources - English is your best bet for such an implementation project to be conducted.

You should also consider hiring an internal AX team for the project, which has a long-term cost of course. But with a good Senior developer/architect you can have a really useful safety net for monitoring what the partner is doing, if they follow Best Practices, can help with ISV selection if required, coordinate your internal teams and resources, and review code provided by the supplier.

It is a good idea to contact your local Microsoft corporate's Dynamics AX business division to get reference visits from customers with similar profiles, and also help with Partner selection and do a cost estimate for you.

thanks for such a complete response.

    I do have further questions,

"We would still have done it on the older, on-premise platform, since we had many distributed locations on 3 contintents, where AX should be able to talk to local production machinery in a very fast manner. "

Talk to machinery as in pull data ? we won't be needing that part since we run plasma cutters apart from network .

    " D365fO "

We are running a current hybrid  exchange / dirsync / o365 right now , with no ADFS in view for now.

So we would need one guy full time to manage this right ? upping opex of this solution

"I do not think you would easily find French native-speaking resources "

no need for french.. just the UI's need to be french.. believe it or not, we are in a dumb state called quebec, where we actually have a POLICE that will hunt us down if we use english anywhere..
