A few questions on additional products AX 7 requires
- Visual Studio 2015 - does the license need to be acquired separately or is there some limited package that comes with AX 7 (like BIDS for SSIS development)?
- SQL Server - when LCS rolls out AX which includes SQL Server, is the charge for SQL Server separate or is it included in AX licensing cost?
On partnersource there is a FAQ document related to licenses. If you are not a partner, contact one for additional questions.
From the FAQ:
The User Subscription License includes the following services: high-availability production instance of Dynamics AX including Azure infrastructure and SQL database consumption, 10 GB storage, developer instance (sandbox 1), standard acceptance test instance (sandbox 2) will be provided for 3 months with the initial implementation and for an additional month for each major update, and disaster recovery.
As far as I have understood there will be initial 10GB database storage. This can be increased by acquiring additional users.
Also I understood that sandbox 1 is also included for one developer box. Additional development boxes should be purchased then.
No, AX license doesn't include development tools such as Visual Studio.
Production environments use SQL Azure, not SQL Server, therefore you seem to be talking about your development and test environments. They currently use a CTP of SQL Server 2016, so it's not relevant. In future, I think it will work in the same way as now with LCS environments with AX 2012 - you have to handle licenses by yourself, nevertheless it's pre-installed with a trial version of SQL Server, you can use your company licenses, subscription-based hosting in Azure or SQL Server Developer Edition. Also don't forget about benefits you get from MSDN subscriptions.
I forgot about those special test and dev boxes provided on subscription bases; they'll include licenses. But check the price.
Related to Visual Studio, I checked the document a bit further:
"We have introduced five different levels of Sandbox environments so customers may purchase the instance that best meets their needs. Please note that customers must bring their own Visual Studios licenses. "
So the special environments would probably have Visual Studio installed as demo version. You should acquire your own VS license.
Thank you, guys! I know I could rely on the two of you for a quick answer!
And thank you for reminding me about SQL Azure, I still get stuck up from time to time in the on-prem model thinking :)
So clearly VS is a separate purchase. I understand VS Online is pretty much a requirement as well for source control and unit testing. Is there anything else needed?
