Back with yet another business challenge .. here you go!

Business Challenge:

There is no stock available in the warehouse at the time of Transfer order creation in the system, the requirement is to create and release the transfer order to the warehouse. The system should create work as well. Once the inventory will be updated in the system, the business user will pick the items from the fixed or bulk locations.

Proposed Solution:

The solution is to enable the option available in the Wave template "Continue Wave processing when work creation fails". This will enable the system to process the wave and create the work even if there is no stock available at the fixed and bulk locations as setting up in the Location Directives.

Wave Template

There is one option available in the wave template that will enable the wave template to process the work even if there is no inventory for an item in the system.

"Continue Wave Processing" When Work Creation Fails: System will use the blank location if it can't reserve the inventory at the location proposed by the location directive. If it's not enabled the wave will fail if the system can't reserve the inventory.

Location Directives

As per our location directive setups, the system will first check the inventory at the fixed picking locations. I have defined the list of zones in my Edit Query setup. 

If the stock is not available at the fixed picking locations system, next search for the inventory at Non fixed locations. 

Step by Step Process

Create Transfer Order

Create the transfer order in D365 from the main warehouse (must be enabled for Warehouse Management Process) to the store.

I have selected the item and entered the transfer order quantity which is not available in my inventory.

Once I released the item to the warehouse, the system has created the work. 

Check On Hand Quantity

The available physical quantity for the item is -600. 

Work Created

The work has been created by the system but no picking location has been specified since this item is not available in the inventory. 

Conclusion And Recommendations 

• Create work even if the inventory is not available is a feasible solution when you are creating and releasing the transfer orders or sales orders when you know that the open purchase orders will be registered soon in the warehouse. 
• Once the purchase orders will be registered in the warehouse, the inventory is available in the location. We can sometimes afford to leverage the pickers to pick the items even from Inbound or StageIn locations to expedite the picking process. 
  
  
• However, once the items are registered and put away to the picking and bulk locations, the warehouse picker can pick the work.
