Outbound sorting

Laurens vd Tang Profile Picture Laurens vd Tang 4,636 Super User 2026 Season 1
It may happen that a company ships multiple sales orders for different customers via the same shipping carrier. In this case it can be efficient to sort the packages in the outbound dock per carrier. For example, the company needs to ship 10 sales orders for different customers. 5 sales orders need to be shipped with UPS and 5 sales orders need to be shipped with DHL. In this case, it might make sense to create two pallets in the outbound area. One pallet that contains all the packages for UPS and a second pallet with the packages for DHL. Dynamics 365 SCM has a feature called “Outbound sorting” With outbound sorting, the warehouse worker can sort the picked and packed items after packing per shipping carrier.

The following picture shows the process flow:

What are the benefits for a company?

1.    Improved efficiency at the outbound dock
2.    Reduced risk of shipping errors
3.    Better coordination with carriers and smoother pickups

Configuration

1.    A wave template

2.    A warehouse worker

3. A location type for the sorting location.

4.    The default location type for sorting must be configured in the Warehouse management parameters

5.    A location profile for the sorting location

6.    A sorting location

 7.    An Outbound sorting template defines how packed outbound shipments are sorted from a sort location, including whether warehouse work is created and whether the sorting process is performed manually by a worker or automatically by the system, based on criteria such as shipping carrier or route.

NumberDescription
1Configuration for the sorting of the shipments
2Grouping of the shipments per carrier service
3Name for the sorting template
4Container or wave demand: determines in which process outbound sorting is applied
5Warehouse, warehouse group, or all: determines in which warehouse outbound sorting is applied
6Sorting location
7The system automatically directs inventory to a position whenever possible, based on the sort template breaks.
8Value > yes
9When the position is closed, the system creates work to transfer the inventory to the final shipping location. If this is set to No, the inventory is immediately picked for the order upon position closure.

8.    A container packing policy

9.    A packing profile

10.    A work class

  11. Mobile device menu items

12.    Mobile device menu

13.    Location directives for the put action from the sort location to the ship location

14.     A work template

Demonstration

1.    Two sales orders

Sales order CCF-0727264

Sales order CCF-0727321

2.    Both sales orders have been released to the warehouse of picking

3.    Both sales orders being picked with support of the warehouse app

4.    The warehouse employee opens the packing screen

5.    Packing sales order CCF-0727264 with support of the packing screen. Two containers will be created.

6.    Packing of sales order CCF-0727321. Two containers will be created.

7.    The warehouse clicks on the menu item “Pallet build” in order to create the first pallet

8.    The warehouse worker scans / enter the first container id of the first sales order. After scanning/entering the container id, the warehouse worker clicks on the confirm button.

9.    The warehouse worker enters a sort position id, for example PL1. The sort position represents pallet or box for the transport. In this demonstration we will create for both transport carriers a separate pallet. A pallet for shipping carrier Air Cargo and a pallet for Flower moving. After entering the sort position id, the worker clicks on the confirm button.

10.    The warehouse worker must also enter a license plate for the pallet.

11.    The warehouse worker must confirm the sort position id (pallet) again

12.    In the “Outbound sorting position assignment” form the created pallet with the license plate is visible

13.    The warehouse worker can sort the remaining container of the first sales order. The warehouse worker clicks again on pallet build

14.    The warehouse worker scans/enters the second container of the first sales order

15.    The warehouse app automatically proposes the sort position PL1 based on the shipping carrier

16.    Confirmation of the sort position PL 1

17.    The second container has been assigned to the “PL1”

18.    The warehouse worker can create the second pallet for the second transport carrier “Flower moving”

19.    The warehouse worker enters the container id with item MX Master 4 of the second sales order

20.    The warehouse worker needs to enter a sort position reference for the pallet of the transport carrier “Flower moving”, for example PL2.

21.    The warehouse worker needs to also enter license plate for the second pallet.

22.    Confirmation of the sort position (pallet)

23.    The second pallet has been created and the container has been assigned

24.    The warehouse worker can sort the second and last container of the second sales order

25.    The warehouse mobile app proposes automatically to assign this container to the first pallet of transport carrier “Air cargo”. The reason for this assignment is that the shipping carrier of the related sales order line is “Air cargo”

26.    Confirmation of the sort position (pallet)

27.    The last container has been assigned to the first pallet

28.    Both pallets are ready to close. There are two options for closing the pallet. Option 1 is via the warehouse app and option 2 via the “Outbound sorting assignment” form. In order to close a pallet via the warehouse app, the worker clicks on “Pallet build” and scans/enter a container which has been sorted

29.    The warehouse worker enters the container id of a sorted container, for example 0000011549

30.    The warehouse app informs the worker that the container has been sorted and asks the worker whether it can be closed.

31.    The worker can close the message and click on the “Close” button

32.    Pallet for shipping carrier “Air cargo” has been closed

33.    The second option for closing is via the “Outbound sorting position assignment” form with the “Close position” button.

34.    The pallet for transport carrier “Flower moving” has been closed

35. Sorted inventory work has been created for the movement from the sort location to the ship location

36.    The work can be executed with mobile device menu item “Load from sorting”

37.    The worker can scan the license plate of the pallet

38.    Confirmation of the picked pallet

39.    Put to the ship location

40.    The second pallet can be moved as well

41.    Confirmation of the put to the ship location

42.    The shipments (pallets) are ready for the shipment to the customer. The warehouse worker can confirm both shipments.

43.    The packing slip can be posted
