How To Open A Development Workspace in Dynamics AX

Community Member Profile Picture Community Member Microsoft Employee

The Development Workspace in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 provides tools to create and edit application elements, such as forms, tables, and X++ classes.

By default, Microsoft Dynamics AX opens in the Application Workspace, which displays user interface elements for end-users.

To open a Development Workspace, press ‘Ctrl + ‘Shift’ + ‘W’ or ‘Ctrl’ + ‘D’ or use the windows icon and select Development Workspace. Developers only requiring the Application Object Tree (AOT) can set additional configurations to open Microsoft Dynamics AX directly into a Development Workspace.

You can use the AOT with two or more display monitors; to do so open multiple workspaces on the same client – where application elements are always synchronized. Up to eight workspaces per client can be opened at the same time. You can even drag and drop elements between different development workspaces. Forms and menu items can also be accessed from the AOT, (within the development workspace), but to view forms from the end user interface, you must switch back to the application workspace.

**Caution should be exercised when working in the AOT**
