Preventing Future Posting Dates in Business Central with General Ledger Date For

Gianardi Profile Picture Gianardi 119

Sometimes the most useful features are the ones you discover almost by chance.

While reviewing the General Ledger Setup page in one of the latest versions of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, I noticed two very useful fields that can significantly improve the control of accounting postings:

  • Allow Posting From DateFormula
  • Allow Posting To DateFormula
These fields allow companies to define posting date limits dynamically, using Business Central date formulas, instead of relying only on fixed dates.

The business requirement

In many companies, accounting teams need to prevent users from posting documents into future periods.

This is especially important when the monthly closing process is not yet completed, or when the company wants to avoid accidental postings into future months.

For example, with the configuration shown above, if today’s work date is 21 May 2026, Business Central allows users to post documents within the current month, but prevents them from posting with a posting date from 1 June 2026 onward.

This means that an invoice, journal entry, or other accounting document dated 31 May 2026 can still be posted, while a document dated 1 June 2026 or later will be blocked by the system.

In practical terms, this setup helps prevent accidental postings into future accounting periods, without requiring users to manually update a fixed “Allow Posting To” date every month.
