Of all the types of problems you can have with item issues might be one of the worst. Review one of the scenarios that might cause that issue.
Scenario:
Let’s say you’re trying to post Inventory adjustment journal, but the journal won’t post. You have some ideas about what could be causing this, so you go through them one by one to see if you can eliminate any possible causes.
Solution:
Each time whenever you see the following error message you should think that you forgot to configure item postings.

There’s no need to get upset right away, as the fix to your problem might be as simple as adding 1 line into configuration.
Let’s step through the process you should perform to fix item posting issues.
Navigate to Product information management > Released product
Search for the item ‘M0024’
Go to the Details view and expand Manage costs fast tab
Notice the Item group

Navigate to Inventory management > Setup > Inventory > Item groups
Find the Item group that is linked to the item that you are going to use.
You will notice that 2 settings are blank

Click Posting button
Switch to Inventory tab
Highlight the Profit radio button

Click Add
Select Item code = Group
Item relation will be automatically filled
Select Main account = 510500

Repeat the same step for Receipt radio button

Go back to Inventory adjustment journal and post it again

Does your problem persist after setting item group?
If yes, before we start diving into settings and tests, the next thing to check is account configuration
Navigate to General ledger > Setup > Ledger > Configure account structure button
Find appropriate account structure
Validate the accounts range for the Main account field. If your account is not in that range it might cause that error message. Because AX found appropriate setting, but base on the account structure AX excluded that account. As the result AX cannot post it.

Once you’ve verified a proper Main account range, check the Status of account structure. If your account structure in the Draft state it doesn’t mean that it’s not used. Because if an account structure was once activated and now it’s in draft state, the last activated version is still used until you activate the structure with a new/changed setup.
And again, it causes an issue above. Even if the account is included in the range inside account structure, it might not have included in the last activated version.

This is just one example of an issue you might encounter while working with posting in AX. In the rest of this post, we’ll talk about other common issue and some ways to solve them.
In AX, there are not many places where you can configure the posting. Below are some of them:
- Inventory, AP, AR, GL: Source document itself (for example, offset account for the transaction)
- Inventory: Item groups
- AP: Vendor posting profiles
- AR: Customer posting profile
- AP, AR, GL: Accounts for automatic transactions
- FA: Fixed asset posting profile
- Bank: Bank accounts
Keep in mind that most posting problems regarding finding the right accounts have simple solutions, although it may take some time to find them.
