Incorrect information in yearend closing and trial balance

During the FY2024 year-end closing process, we noted that the closing journal shows a transaction amount of 1,301,202.30 for accounts 13040000. However, this amount does not reconcile with the corresponding balances shown in the Trial Balance at 2024-12-31.

Could you please advise on the possible cause of this discrepancy and what may be incorrect?

    Hi J Lee,

I think to understand there is another amount as opening balance compared to the year end amount actual posted. I don't know what exactly you retrieved in your Excel sheet and if this is correct or complete. It looks like there are multiple lines for the same ledger account. Is this linked to a specific dimension value combination? Assuming the amount is correct, then one of the reason can be that there are new postings in 2024 after when the opening balance was created.

The excel figure is the journal entries in 2024 year-end closing.

    Hello,

When you run the closing process in D365FO, it takes a snapshot of the balances at that moment.
    Recommendation:
    • Export the 2024 transactions (even just for the main account) and check if the closing / opening balance is consistent.
    • If not, run the closing process again to realign the balances.
    • If the D365FO balances are consistent, the issue is in your Excel file.

    Thank you,
    Giorgio

    Hi J. Lee,

It is impossible to know from these screenshots what happened in your environment. Do you have a partner that can assist you by looking at the details in your environment?

    Hi, Aoo,

I found it is caused by the closing ledger adjustment (i.e. general ledger > period Close > closing period adjustments).

My users inputted the adjustment in 31 DEC, 2024 and then the 2025 opening balance was changed.

Please advise why the TB in 2024 didn't reflect this closing ledger adjustment.

    Hi J Lee,

After using the closing sheet, the Opening balances needs to be updated or regenerated again. This is not an automatic process as the application is not aware if all adjustments or other journals are finalized.

    Hi J Lee,

Can you tell which exact data entity you have used?

    Hi Andre,

The closing adjustment ledger was inputted via General Ledger > Period Close > Closing period adjustments.

    Its data source is GeneralJournalEntry

    Thanks
    Jessica

The discrepancy between the year‑end closing journal amount (1,301,202.30) and the Trial Balance closing balance (-105,380.70) for account 13040000 is typically caused by timing and adjustment sequence during the closing period process.
    🔍 Root Cause Analysis
    • Closing sheet adjustments: Entries posted via General Ledger > Period Close > Closing period adjustments are not automatically reflected in the Trial Balance until the opening balances are regenerated. The system treats these adjustments as post‑closing corrections.
    • Snapshot behavior of year‑end closing: When the closing process runs, it captures balances as of that moment. Any subsequent postings (like adjustments on 31 Dec 2024) will not retroactively update the snapshot used for the Trial Balance.
    • Dimension combination impact: Multiple lines for the same main account but different dimension values can cause apparent mismatches if the Excel export aggregates incorrectly or omits certain combinations.
    • DMF data entity limitation: The GeneralJournalEntry entity does not directly expose closing sheet entries. These are stored under LedgerClosingSheetLine and related tables, so DMF exports may miss them.
    🧩 Recommended Actions
    1. Re‑generate opening balances after posting closing adjustments to ensure the Trial Balance reflects the final figures.
    2. Export ledger transactions for account 13040000 covering Dec 2024 – Jan 2025 to confirm the adjustment postings and verify the transition between closing and opening balances.
    3. Validate closing sheet entries using General Ledger > Period Close > Closing sheet inquiries to review the adjustment lines and their posting dates.
    4. Compare Trial Balance and ledger details by dimension combination to ensure all lines are included in your Excel reconciliation.
    5. If the discrepancy persists, rerun the year‑end closing process after confirming all adjustments are finalized.
    💡 Additional Tip
When closing adjustments are entered on the same date as the fiscal‑year end (e.g., 31 Dec 2024), they affect the opening balances of 2025, not the closing balances of 2024. To reflect them in 2024, either rerun the closing process or post the adjustment before executing the closing routine.
