Sell a service item and let MRP generate a planned purchase order

Posted on by 155
Hi everyone!

I have a use case I am trying to solve:

" Sell a service and let the system generate a related purchase order"

Initially, I thought of setting up a service item and adding an item model group with the "Stocked item" configured to Yes so that MRP can fetch this need and create a planned purchase order. However, my tests show that this approach doesn't work.

I found a thread from 2017 that confirms my initial thoughts: Master planning doesn't generate purchase order on service items (dynamics.com)

Additionally, I read a blog post that explains service items in more depth. It suggests that you can create planned purchase orders, but only in subcontracting scenarios, such as when the service item is in a BOM. Here's the blog post for reference:. Service products in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 - Microsoft Dynamics 365 Blog

After some more testing I can conclude that MRP does not generate a planned purchase order from a Sales order.

Is my conclusion correct?

    Hello Agon,

That's correct. I've tested your scenario and I didn't get a planned order from MRP:
