Project / Job Working Capital calculation

Hi everyone,

We're a project-based company and make extensive use of the Jobs/Projects module in Business Central.

I'm trying to determine our actual month-end working capital by individual project so that management can better understand our financing requirements.

The goal is to answer questions such as:

  • Which projects are consuming working capital?

  • Which projects are generating cash?

  • If we exclude the working capital impact of certain large projects, would we still require external financing?

I'm looking for a way to calculate working capital at the project level, ideally including items such as:

  • Project WIP

  • Accounts Receivable related to the project

  • Accounts Payable related to the project

  • Inventory (where applicable)

  • Customer advances/prepayments

  • Vendor commitments or accrued costs (if relevant)

Has anyone successfully built project-level working capital reporting in Business Central?

Specifically:

  1. Is there a standard report or analysis that can be adapted?

  2. Are you using dimensions instead of relying solely on Jobs?

  3. How do you allocate A/R and A/P back to individual projects?

  4. Have you built this in Power BI or directly in Business Central?

  5. Are there any ISV solutions that provide project cash flow or project working capital reporting?

I'd appreciate hearing how others have approached this, particularly companies with a large number of active projects where understanding project-specific financing requirements is important.

Thanks in advance!
