Error when attempting to copy-paste a JPG image into the Note on the timeline of a Case entity

I’m encountering an issue in D365 CRM. Users from one Business Unit (BU) are receiving the following error when attempting to copy-paste a JPG image into the Note on the timeline of a Case entity: enter image description here

Here’s what I’ve investigated so far:

  1. The Note field in the annotation entity exceeds 1,000,000 characters, so the error isn’t related to text length.
  2. The issue specifically arises when pasting images into text area, they can still attach the image as an attachment.

I’ve tried to replicate the issue using:

  1. My own user account.
  2. Impersonating the affected user.

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to reproduce the error. However, on the day this case was reported, I also received the same error. Upon investigation, I found that the error was triggered by the plugin: Plugin/Microsoft.Crm.ObjectModel.TargetAttributeValidationPlugin

enter image description here

Interestingly, the issue resolved itself on my machine without any intervention but persists for users in the affected BU.

Does anyone have insights into why this might be happening or suggestions for a potential fix?

Thank you in advance!

Thanks for post/comments. Opened a ticket with MSFT. They acknowledged the bug and said the fix will be released May 5th. Will update accordingly.

Error when attempting to copy-paste a JPG image into the Note on the timeline of a Case entity
This looks like an issue that may require a ticket into Microsoft from your tenant, especially as it appears this is happening to other folks in other organizations as well.

I do know from working with some clients that it appears Microsoft is updating the Rich Text controls behind the scenes, so I wonder if that caused an issue. If anyone hears back from MS with some details, I recommend posting it back to this forum for other people to see.

I am receiving this same error.  Copy and pasting an image into the timeline notes component.

    Anyone find an update/fix?

We have the same issue that started on the 24th March. Has been working fine before this date.

Error when attempting to copy-paste a JPG image into the Note on the timeline of a Case entity
    Hello CU09090633-0,

You've encountered a perplexing issue with image pasting into Notes on the Case timeline, especially with the error pointing to Microsoft.Crm.ObjectModel.TargetAttributeValidationPlugin. Let's break down the potential causes and troubleshooting steps.

    Understanding the Error and Context:
    • Microsoft.Crm.ObjectModel.TargetAttributeValidationPlugin:
      • This plugin is a core system plugin that validates attribute values before they are saved.
      • The fact that it's triggering the error suggests that the pasted image data is failing some validation check.
    • Business Unit (BU) Specific Issue:
      • The fact that the issue is isolated to a specific BU points to a configuration or security difference between BUs.
      • This is a very important clue.
    • Image Pasting vs. Attachment:
      • The fact that attaching images works but pasting doesn't indicates that the problem is with the way the image data is being handled during the pasting process.
    • Intermittent Issue:
      • The fact that you saw the error once, and then it resolved itself, points to a timing issue, or a environmental issue.

    Potential Causes and Solutions:
    1. Business Unit Security/Permissions:
      • Field Security Profiles:
        • Check if there are any field security profiles applied to the Note (annotation) entity or its fields that are specific to the affected BU.
        • These profiles can restrict or modify data input, which could be interfering with the image pasting.
      • Security Roles:
        • Compare the security roles of users in the affected BU with those in other BUs.
        • Look for any differences in permissions related to the Note entity, file attachments, or general data input.
      • Business Unit Settings:
        • While less likely, there might be subtle differences in BU settings that are affecting data validation.
    2. Browser-Specific Issues:
      • Browser Extensions:
        • Browser extensions can sometimes interfere with web application functionality.
        • Ask the affected users to try disabling their browser extensions to see if that resolves the issue.
      • Browser Cache/Cookies:
        • Corrupted browser cache or cookies can cause unexpected behavior.
        • Have the users clear their browser cache and cookies.
      • Browser Version:
        • Ensure that the affected users are using a supported and up-to-date browser.
    3. Plugin Behavior:
      • Plugin Customization:
        • If there are any custom plugins registered on the Note (annotation) entity, they could be interfering with the system's validation plugin.
        • Temporarily disable custom plugins to see if that resolves the issue.
      • Plugin Configuration:
        • While unlikely for a system plugin, there might be some configuration settings that are causing the validation to fail.
      • Data Validation:
        • The plugin is validating the data that is being pasted. There could be some sort of encoding issue, or data corruption happening during the copy paste action.
    4. Network Issues:
      • Network Latency:
        • Network latency or intermittent connectivity issues could be causing data corruption during the paste operation.
      • Firewall/Proxy:
        • Firewall or proxy settings might be interfering with the data transfer.
    5. Data Size/Encoding:
      • Image Size:
        • Even though you ruled out the 1,000,000-character limit, very large images might still be causing issues.
      • Encoding:
        • The way the image data is encoded during the paste operation might be causing a validation error.

    Troubleshooting Steps:
    1. Detailed Logging:
      • Enable detailed logging on the Dynamics 365 server to capture more specific error messages and plugin execution details.
    2. Isolate the Issue:
      • Try to narrow down the conditions that trigger the error.
      • Ask the affected users to provide specific examples of images that cause the problem.
    3. Test with Different Images:
      • Have the users try pasting different images, with different file sizes, and different file types.
    4. Network Analysis:
      • If possible, capture network traffic during the paste operation to see if there are any errors or anomalies.
    5. Microsoft Support:
      • If the issue persists, contact Microsoft Support. They can investigate the server-side logs and provide more specific guidance.

    Key Recommendation:
    • Focus on investigating the security and permission differences between the affected BU and other BUs. This is the most likely cause.

I hope these suggestions help you resolve the issue.
