Min/max stock levels NOT set by warehouse

Hello,

I am wondering if it possible to set up a min/max value for an item, but not site or warehouse specific. But rather, D365 looks at our total stock across all of our sites.

That is, when Master Planning runs, it would look at our aggregate stock across the whole network, and suggest a planned order to be fulfilled at one of our sites.

Item coverage could be where this happens.

To reiterate, my idea is:
  • Set a min (and max) value of total stock across all sites, not individual sites.
  • Master Planning calculates total stock across all sites, not individual sites.
  • When total stock is forecast to dip below the minimum quantity required, master Planning then suggests a planned order to be fulfilled/delivered at one of our sites.
  • This stock can then be moved around our network as required.
For example:
  • Minimum total stock required in network: 100,000 units
  • Site A stock: 50,000
  • Site B stock: 60,000
  • Therefore, we are above our network safety stock
  • If site B had 40,000 units, we would be below our network safety stock.

The level at which you can define Min Stock (and do planning in general) is defined by the Storage dimension group. The setting for the Site line always looks like this, and these parameters cannot be changed on the Site line:

The tick on the Coverage plan by dimension field means that planning is enabled at Site level, and this tick box cannot be removed at Site level. This is deliberate; Site is mandatory wherever Stocked items are used.

So, it is not possible to do what you describe, because Site is always mandatory for planning, and must always be specified when setting Min stock level.

Perhaps you could get what you want if you configure only one Site, in which all your warehouses are located. You would need to have Coverage plan by dimension switched off at the Warehouse level. This means Master Planning couldn't plan transfers between your warehouses, and all planning would take place above the Warehouse level. When your stock dropped below Min, Master planning would suggest a planned order for your only Site (i.e. the warehouse would need to be chosen manually).
