Partner source account to download dynamics ax 2012 virtual machine

I have a prospective client and would like to trial it out (New BI and reporting and interfacing 3rd party application via c# code)before proposing and i don't have a partner source account nor does my work place have it. Is there a way for me to get hold of the dynamics ax 2012 virtual machine software please.

It is frustrating there is no option to get access other than partner source account

I also don't mind subscribing for a fee , in order to get access.

Forum members please provide me options.

You say prospective client but if you don't have a partnersource account that implies you cannot resell AX anyway. You should work with whomever you will use to buy the license and get a demo from them.

Otherwise the only legal option would be to ask Microsoft directly, but they will most likely get you in touch with a partner anyway.

FYI - You don't have to sell Dynamics AX to have a Dynamics AX Client - you just have to be a good developer.

I am in a similar boat - I have access to Dynamics AX through my TechNet account, I created a Dynamics AX 2009 Virtual Machine with Windows 2008/R2, SQL Server 2008/R2, SharePoint Foundation and Dynamics AX 2009, but without sample data or access to the illusive pre-sales demo kit vhd, it is very difficult verify that you have correctly written your X++ code.

It is hard to see what advantage it is to Microsoft to withold AX sample data from the developer community, especially as NAV, CRM, and SQL Server come with sample data in the install image.

Sample Data is an essential tool in learing a new highly complex system - such as ERP or CRM.

(free ramblings - worth every penny you paid for them)

    Cheers.

Agree with Joris. If you are a VAR you can sell AX. Contact Microsoft for it.

    Let me re-phrase...

You do not need to be a VAR to have a client who needs you to write custom code for Dynamics AX.

I have customized many products over the years and never needed to sell/resell any of them.

I'm just pointing out (for the fun of it) that VARs are not the only people who need/want sample data.

    Cheers.

PS - I know this is never going to get resolved here - so this is my last post in this thread :-)

I know what you are saying. But same thing there, if you are working with a customer - that customer has access to customer source which contains demo images and sample data. If the customer does NOT have access, that's the fault of their partner for not providing that access (which they should - go complain).

So to the question originally: from a trial perspective for prospective clients - you need to go through a partner to buy anyway, so that's where you can get a demo image - or request from Microsoft directly assuming they are willing to.

For external consultants working with AX and you need sample data - that implies you have access to the AX software and a license which implies whomever got that AX software also has access to the sample data for it.

The irony here is that you do not have to have a client with AX to lawfully have a copy of AX.

It comes with MSDN and TechNet subscriptions. Unfortunatly, the sample data does not. Which is the root cause of the problem, in my humble opinion.

I have spent the last 2 weeks trying to find this elusive data - and will be contacting the Dynamics team shortly, having exhausted all other options at this point in time.

For myself, I will learn X++ even if I have to enter the data manually into the tables. (more likely I'll import a sample of the Contoso or Adventure Works data after I learn enough X++ to write an import routine).

    Thanks for the empathy.

    Cheers. :-)

I do empathize (assuming your comment was sarcastic). I guess I knew you could download it from MSDN, didn't know you actually got a license for it (I know, seems stupid but I thought it was similar to the demo data, you got one thing but not the other) which I just checked and found out.

I say the demo data should go up on MSDN to be in line, then it's consistent. They can't really make it public since it (the database) contains the license.

Oh and also, the migration tool to import data and other things are available on informationsource.dynamics.com but again no access unless you're a customer or partner.

Actually, for TechNet the license is a txt file you import into the database as part of the installation process.

Silly question, how does one become a "Dynamics Partner"? I am a Microsoft Partner, but that seems to be different than a "Dynamics Partner" - according to the nice lady on the Partner Net help line. (yes she gave ma a 1-800 number to call, but since we are having this conversation, and others may benefit, I thought I would ask you as well :-) ).

    Thanks again for your help.

    Cheers.

I've always joined one, never became one :-)

So I'll leave that to anyone else who may know.

Yes, the licenses are text files to import. Also, if you're an MCT by any chance, you can get full hyper-v images (including demo data which you could take a backup of). Also, MCTs can get access to PartnerSource as an individual.
