Multiple warehouses instead of locations within same physical building

Hi Experts,

Need guidance if as how to approach below scenario in Dynamics 365 F&O out of box. My customer is using AX 2012 and upgrading to Dynamics 365 F&O. Customer is using basic warehousing.

At present, customer has defined zones as warehouses within same physical building. Customer has also defined multiple sites for the same physical site address. Following are the reasons of current setup

  1. To segregate stock in the same physical building for a particular customer or market segment (reasons could include physical footwear properties/accreditation/stock availability/quarantine considerations)
  2. Need visibility (records) of stock transfers, both into and out of certain areas, currently from one warehouse to another
  3. Need the ability to invoice only from within a select number of locations/warehouses and not others, currently managed through warehouses and their activated properties
  4. Need an easy way to exclude stock from certain queries/reports, which is currently done via warehouse segregation. Remembering which location to exclude, for instance doesn’t seem intuitive if the location ID is not descriptive/concise.
  5. Sometimes stock that is considered “active” for one market segment is inactive/obsolete for another market segment even if it is within the same physical building. This is currently managed through the obsolete/discontinued status by SITE as opposed to warehouse.
  6. In the case of stock that is in transit, we wish to maintain visibility of ETA’s (which are updated depending on shipping schedules), and this stock is not currently available to be invoiced/to allocate against for any of our customer orders.

My though of design as follows. Need your point of view

  1. Enable advanced warehousing for the Warehouse
  2. Have only 1 site and 1 Default warehouse
  3. Convert Warehouses (used at present) to Zones/locations based on multiple criteria described above in point# 1 and point# 5
  4. Use OOTB transportation management for point# 6
  5. Use transfer journal for point# 2 instead of transfer orders
  6. Use Physical on hand report by location for point# 4

Let me know your thoughts. Thanks in advance

    Hi Vaibhav,

Thanks for your clarifications. Related to your second point. Do you mean you need to have an Advanced Shipping Notification (ASN)? In that case, watch the next video for some guidance: www.youtube.com/watch

    Hi Andre Arnaud de Calavon,

    1. Yes, the intention is to use scanner/mobile device for picking, putting and registration items.
    2. Wouldn't TMS help in maintaining ETAs for various incoming shipments on loads? What could be the alternative if that's not the case.
    3. Agree the limitations of transfer journals vs orders. Transfer order is a detailed process as compared to journal.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi VS,

I will add my two cents here, but don't have the time to fully answer all questions.

    1) Are you intending to use the warehouse mobile devices for picking and putting items? If not, it wouldn't be the best choice.

    2) You can use the inventory dimension inventory status or warehouses to separate the "zones".

    3) You can indeed use locations as well as an inventory status; see also my reply on #2.

    4) I don't think the transportation module will cover your requirement here. It is used for routing/pricing inquiries; not monitoring each transport in detail.

    5) With the transfer orders, you have a transit time; separation of shipping and receiving. This is not supported with a journal.

    6) There are various options. It would depend on all choices you have to make here.
