How to Disable Automatic Firming of Planned Orders

The company I work for is attempting to begin utilizing planned production orders to communicate item requirements. Because we are an ETO company, we have a consistent need to review and modify or establish the route and BOM content of a firmed planned production order prior to Releasing or Starting the order. For this reason, we would like to set the Requested Production Status on specific coverage groups to "Created" rather than to "Scheduled", "Released", or "Started".

When I attempt to set the Requested Production Status field on a given coverage group to "Created", I receive an error message that states "Production status Created is illegal when firming is made automatically." After doing some research on automatic firming (which we are not currently using), I have confirmed that the Firming checkbox in the Time Fence fast tab within the Master Plans parameters is unchecked, and that the associated field is populated with a value of zero.

Is there another parameter that controls automatic firming? If so, where would it be located?

One of the reasons is planning ignores created orders and replans for the supply, it is supposed to be a temporary status and you immediately estimate it. RAF and Ended are available as options but you would not want to pick them for obvious reasons. Estimated only ever runs the estimation, therefore the assumption is your minimum starting point for a firmed order is released. I dont necessarily agree but that is the logic they have employed. Basically ignoring auro-firming which you say is not happening and is not configured you firm from the planned orders and AX by design wants you to pick the status Released, Scheduled or Started - that is the logic out of the box.

The "requested production status" dropdown gets populated with all the valid production statuses that exist, but you can only select Released, Scheduled, Started.  Their is validation on the form that always throws the error unless you select one of these statuses.  You could have a Developer look at the method and see if you can comment it out and get what you are after.  I'd suspect their is some reason why this code was written though.  The logic is on ReqGroup.AutoProdStatus:Validate

I just put this to the test. It appears that auto firming is not taking place, but apparently the system still thinks that it is. I still receive the original error message when attempting to set the Requested Production Status to anything earlier than Scheduled, despite checking the box for auto firming and ensuring that the associated field value is set to zero.

Tick the box for auto firming and set the value to 0 on your master plan.

The check box overrides the coverage groups and other settings and 0 will not auto firm the order.

The same should be done for Action message and Delays/futures if you're not using them... Even though ticking that Master plan should not use them they still get processed. Checking the box and setting it to 0 will however make the system not process them.

RE: How to Disable Automatic Firming of Planned Orders

We are not currently (and have no immediate plans to) utilize auto firming, at least as I understand the functionality. Our plan as it stands is to manually approve and firm planned production orders on an as-reviewed basis.

However, when we do this the firmed production orders come across into the all production orders module with a status of Scheduled, and we were trying to nail down the parameter that controls this and change it to Created.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding the definition of auto firming. Would the manual approval and firming process I've outlined above be considered auto firming? If not, what parameter controls the status of production orders that are created by manually firming a planned production order?

The error message is because AX only allows auto firming to scheduled, released or started, you can't auto firm to the other production statuses.

Thanks for the tip on the third parameter location! Unfortunately, it appears that the Coverage parameters in Product Information Management are also deselected for the Firming time fence (value is set to zero). Still scratching my head on why I'm receiving the error message that I am when I attempt to change the Requested Production Status for planned production orders.

I appreciate your ideas on suggested processes. We have tested making changes to the route and BOM versions assigned to unprocessed planned production orders, and have found that the changes are not being flushed down to the planned order. Perhaps we should explore why this is happening in more detail.

Your recommendation for a batch process is a good one. We were originally considering approving and firming on an as-reviewed basis, but I'll definitely give some thought to implementing a batch process to reset status.

Auto firming time fences can be set in three areas, two you have found, third is Product Info Mgmt -> Released product -> Plan tab in ribbon -> Item Coverage-> General Tab -> Override time fences.

For your situation two processes you could follow come to mind:

    1. Review planned orders outside the firming time fence and "Approve" them after reviewing the route / BOM that was assigned by planning or making changes / calling out a different route / bom.  Once they are approved, planning will not reschedule them or pick up BOM / route changes, so make sure you test this.
    2. Auto firm all orders to a status of Scheduled, then have a batch job that runs immediately after planning and resets status on all productions that are "Scheduled" to "Created".  You can set this up at Production Control -> Periodic -> Production Orders -> Reset Status.
