Word & Dynamics GP Templates don't print after today's Office Update 9-9-2020

Hello All!

Today, almost all of us updated Office (Build 13127.20408) and now we cannot print Word Template SOP Invoices from Dynamics GP.

We get a box that says:

Word experienced an error trying open the file.

Try these suggestions.

*Check the file permission for the document or drive.

*Make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space.

*Open the file with the Text Recovery converter.

(gives file path of what we are printing.)

We could all print invoices on Friday, and this morning. But once Outlook started acting up, I checked for updates and installed them. I advised other staff to do the same. Now, only un-updated machines can print these docs.

Any help would be appreciated!

9-11-2020 Update: MS advised me to post here although I am thinking it is an Office Update issue. Thanks & Happy Friday!

    Justin that is good news, GP will just incorporate the change / fix into one of the upcoming patches - hopefully no later than Year End Tax - so that there is no added cost to the client.

    I understand that Office broke our (GP) working solution, but if there is / was a security concern in Office, then that has to be addressed as well and if the way GP was using the Office solution was using something that was a potential security issue, then I think the client base will be OK with the solution coming from GP at this time.

    Hello Bill and Crystal,

    The fix required some code changes on our end, which means there isn't really any great way to provide the fix without an update to GP.

    Since we are forced to update code, we wanted to roll it into updates you are likely already doing anyways. This shouldn't change your standard year-end process at all. This was the best way to release the fix without forcing many customers to upgrade twice (this fix, then year-end).

    Yes, Office broke the process, but they are simply unable to do anything to help us here.

    Since the issue on their side is security based (nothing on the GP side leads to any security concerns), they can't really 'fix' it in any way. Any workaround just defeats the purpose of the update in the first place.

    I could not agree more with this!!! They "broke" Office, so just fix Office!

    Justin, to be clear - when GP has a fix it will be attached to a Service Pack - to a Year End update - to one of the expected updates we and our clients are expecting.  This will not be a special release?  This is after all a Microsoft issue and we can not expect the end client to have to pay for the fix.

    At this time we have confirmed that this issue is due to a security update on the Office side that flipped the order of some parts of the XML that make up Word documents. As this is a security update, the Office team is not going to roll back this change. The fix will be to update GP.

    Just to clarify, there will eventually be an Office update that fixes the issue without having to upgrade GP?

    Crystal,

    I believe Microsoft said in their blog post that they are working on putting the fix for 2016 in the year-end release that's coming out soon (November or December).

    Unfortunately for many clients, there might be no fix released for older GP versions as they are officialy no longer supported for updates (2015 ended on 2020-04).

    That's great! However, not all of us are on that version. :/

    Any news as to when the rest of us will see a fix via Office so that we can all print to our heart's content again?

    HI Michael,

    you don't need a copy of Adobe Acrobat Writer installed, as Word can natively generate PDF formats.. Those will be just fine as attachment e-mailed to your clients or vendors.

    However, PDF only works in the case of e-mailing.. not local printing to file or screen, in which case only DOCX format is available.
