Word & Dynamics GP Templates don't print after today's Office Update 9-9-2020

Hello All!

Today, almost all of us updated Office (Build 13127.20408) and now we cannot print Word Template SOP Invoices from Dynamics GP.

We get a box that says:

Word experienced an error trying open the file.

Try these suggestions.

*Check the file permission for the document or drive.

*Make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space.

*Open the file with the Text Recovery converter.

(gives file path of what we are printing.)

We could all print invoices on Friday, and this morning. But once Outlook started acting up, I checked for updates and installed them. I advised other staff to do the same. Now, only un-updated machines can print these docs.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you in advance!

CK

9-11-2020 Update: MS advised me to post here although I am thinking it is an Office Update issue. Thanks & Happy Friday!

    Hello Crystal,

We have noted that something changed in the Current Channel Office Update on 9/9 that is leading to the Word templates not opening.

What is really odd is that the issue comes down to the user opening the document, not who generates it.

For example, if I generate it on a workstation that is updated (and can't open it) and send that file (either by saving it to file from the GP print options window, or by grabbing the completed file from the users %TEMP% folder) to an unupgraded user (or someone on a different upgrade channel), they CAN open the file.

We are working to figure out what exactly changed, and to mitigate the issue, but in the meantime it is best to roll back to the previous version of Word and to turn off auto updates for just a bit.

We will be updating either this post, or releasing a blog at the link in my signature once we have everything nailed down.

    My apologies for the inconvenience.

    Thank you!
We will work to undo the Office Update, however, that comes with its own problems as we were having issues with Outlook, hence us checking for updates.

Since we can open on other machines, we will pause their updates and use them for printing until this is resolved.

If you could please update this thread, or email me directly once a fix is found, I would appreciate it. I was not able to find your signature for the blog post.

    Thanks again!

    Hi Justin,

I just tested this by doing the Office 365 update and got the same results.

What's the quickest way to roll back an Office 365 update?

    Thanks,

    Ken

    Hi Ken,

I usually recommend the steps Karsten has here:

    community.dynamics.com/.../dynamics-gp-crashes-closes-when-emailing-after-office-update

The previous update is 13127.20296, just toss 16.0 in front of it. So you would use 16.0.13127.20296.

Crystal, we do not currently have anything released on this as we are still digging into the issue. My signature has a link to the GP Support Team's blog, where we will release any updated information. I will also update here.

    Hello,

Here is a post I just wrote up.

We are working with the office team to get the issue identified and resolved. I will make sure to update here, and the blog post when we have a fix:

Edit: It would help if I provided the link: https://community.dynamics.com/gp/b/dynamicsgp/posts/word-templates-will-not-email-print-after-office-update

    Hi Justin,

    Here's my update:

I tried to roll back from version 16.0.12527.20612, the version I was upgraded to this morning, and the roll back would get an error telling me to go do a online repair.

After the online repair failed, Office 365 32-bit version was removed from my PC.  I reinstall and the version it gave me was 16.0.13029.20232.

This version worked fine opening the Invoice with Word.

This is becoming a major issue. Customer that print quotes and invoices via Word templates are fuming!

    Hi,

We are having the same issue and I was wondering if anyone has found a way to fix this?

    Thank you,

    JT

There have been a few fixes posted, this one seems to be the easiest. I would simply uninstall Office and reinstall v 16.0.13029.20232. Go get it before that gets updated. Also, don't forget to Disable Updates!

    Hi Crystal,

Thank you for your prompt response. Unfortunately because we have more than one user on our server we won't be able to do this and we just have to wait till Microsoft updates again and fixes this issue.

    Regards,

    JT
