Dear All,

Can you please let me know when to use "Auto Design" and when to use "Precision Design" in SSRS report?

Is there any specific criteria to use both design?

Please give me more shed on this.

Thanks!

Arpan

An autodesign is just a real quick tabular layout for that report that has a low front-end component.  It looks at the dataset and creates a simple, uniform table-like design.  Hence, you use a query to quickly get something up and running.  Works well for that quick report solution when you need to mainly get some data out fast and the users aren't too picky on how it looks.

A precision design is where you control the front end -- hence you do things like control where the logos are displayed, how layouts are made, etc..  Perhaps, you are making an invoice, for example, that requires custom footers.  Or you do things like color values in a table based on certain thresholds.

Precision designs are more common for custom development, but autos are nice when you can use them.

Precision design is the only tool with which you could control behaviour of different sections of your report, add a company logo with additional details, or to do anything more advanced really.

Practical use for them is that an autodesign is typically used for internal, and precision design is for external customer-facing reports that require more fanciness.

    Thanks Brandon and Vilmos,

As i understand we can do complex design with "Precision design" only and quick and simple design with "Auto design" only.

Here Internal customer means our company requirement based on different department.

And External customer means requirement came from "Customer".

Note : For both Internal and External If it's simple requirement go for "Auto design" else "Precision design".

    Is't correct?

Please give me more shed on this.

You could say that but it is your choice.  To tell you the truth, as a matter of preference, I always create precision reports anyway.  Dragging columns over to table only takes a minute. With experience, the time savings from using an autodesign versus a precision design aren't that significant if your precision design isn't that complicated.  But as I said, it's just a matter of preference.

If you are a .net developer, you can think of it like scaffolding versus building a custom website.

    Thanks Brandon,

So, any thing is specail in "Precision design" which is not possible in "Auto design".

Because as your and Vilmos answers both are you prefered.

    Thanks!

you can use auto-design for the simple report only as the quick design

also, you can use it then edit this design as you need

    Thanks Hakim

That means there is no hard and fast rule to use Auto design or Precision design.

We can use any one design (Auto or Precision) which i want right?

    Please confirm.

    Thanks!
