Timeline Shows Rich Text Editor for Read-Only Email Activities – Unexpected Behavior

Hi all,

We're experiencing a strange issue in our Dynamics 365 Sales environment. Recently, the Rich Text Editor toolbar started appearing on email activities in the Timeline, even though these emails are read-only.

This was not the case before — the RTE panel used to be completely hidden for read-only emails. Now it appears for all users, across all forms and entities, but the toolbar doesn't work (since the record isn't editable).

This appears to be a UI bug or regression introduced by a recent update, possibly related to the Timeline control or platform changes. We've confirmed:

  • It occurs across all entities (e.g., Contact, Opportunity, etc.).

  • It affects all users

  • No recent customizations were made on our side

  • The email records are not editable, yet the toolbar still renders

I've attached a screenshot to show how the editor appears on a read-only email.

Has anyone else seen this behavior recently? Is this a known issue or tied to a specific update?

Thanks in advance!

    Hope you're doing well.

Yes, this appears to be a known UI regression introduced in a recent update to Dynamics 365 Sales. The issue involves the Rich Text Editor (RTE) toolbar appearing on read-only email activities in the Timeline—even though the toolbar is non-functional and should be hidden.

    What We Know:
    • It affects all users and all entities (e.g., Contact, Opportunity).
    • The toolbar appears even though the email records are not editable.
    • There have been no customizations on your side.
    • This behavior was not present before and seems tied to a recent platform or Timeline control update.

    Community Confirmation:
This exact issue has been reported by other users in the Dynamics 365 Community Forum [1], confirming it's not isolated to your environment.

    Recommended Actions:
    • Log a support ticket with Microsoft to escalate the issue and track resolution progress.
    • Monitor the release notes and known issues page for updates related to the Timeline control or RTE behavior.
    • If the toolbar is causing confusion, consider temporarily disabling the RTE control on the Timeline via form customization—though this is a workaround, not a fix.
