Dynamics 365 app for outlook - "You haven't been authorized to use this app. Check with your system administrator to update your settings."

Hi

We are testing the dynamics 365 app for outlook (on CRM 9 + Outlook 2016 16.0.4639x), we have setup a security role as per instructions here. However the message "You haven't been authorized to use this app. Check with your system administrator to update your settings." still appears.

I have since seen the blog post located here: https://nothingnessit.wordpress.com/2018/03/07/dynamics-crm-365-app-for-outlook-permission-error/

Which tells me I need to enabled 'Create and Write' for the App entity. - This does work, however I'm a little dubious as to what this actually gives the user access too, or whether it is actually necessary (the issue being something else).

Can anyone with more information clarify if this is the only method to fix the issue?

Many thanks

Yes that setting merely gives the user the right to write data into the entity that provides the background information the Dynamics 365 for outlook app needs to work. It doesn't provide any permissions beyond that.

    Thankyou for replying Ben.

To clarify. Those settings allow an app (outlook or another) to access the functionality it needs to work correctly. It does not give the user any extra permission to do anything untoward?

(from memory) The AppforOutlookModule entity contains the server side version of the users configuration details. That entity doesn't provide anything beyond ensuring the app for outlook can access / pull the information it needs to run correctly.

It's probably worth adding here that the Dynamics 365 app for outlook is available across all devices where outlook runs not just in the Windows Outlook application but also across their phone / tablet or browser if they access outlook from those devices or the outlook web client...
