Can anyone suggest a good tool for 2D level layout design, especially when there is a lot of levels and you need some kind of overview of it all? I did see that some people are using photoshop to make low rez images to get tile like effect but in the end, I would end whit a lot of images that I have to open one by one to see it all. There’s got to be a better way then what I am doing since I am currently using pen and paper :)
Hi,
Microsoft recommends using Visio for 2D Layout design and then export it to HoloLens or Windows Mixed Reality. Please find the detailed steps below for using Visio to create a 2D Layout:
Step 1: Download and install the Visio Add-in for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Layout
Step 2: Create your floor plan with Microsoft Visio
Step 3: Import your floor plan using the Dynamics 365 Import Tool (Preview)
The floor plan shows up automatically in Dynamics 365 Layout on a mixed reality immersive headset connected to the same PC.
To use the layout on HoloLens, you’ll need to move it there:
On HoloLens, open the Dynamics 365 Layout app. You’ll find your layout on the Layouts tab.
For reference, these steps are also available here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/mixed-reality/layout/user-guide
Thanks!
Thank you so much!My issue has been resolved now!
Have a good day & Regards,

John,
I echo the use of Visio. But I also have an alternative for you to consider and that is Sketchup. Sketchup was bought by Trimble, who is partner, and also Hololens viewer similar to Layout. I think they each app (Layout, Sketchup Viewer) have their place but by getting Sketchup you could (1) create models to export to Hololens and (2) get a Hololens app as well.
Just a thought.

I'd say Sketch is pretty good. I like how you can collaborate in real-time with your colleagues or friends, work on the same project, in the same document. SketchUp is also pretty cool, and although it was mainly designed for 3D, you can now easily switch to a 2D view as well: When you open a new file, you choose Standard Top Camera, and then choose Parallel Projection, and voila! This will make it easier to draw plans in 2D. I'm now in the process of better learning how to edit photos on iPhone, and I was advised I can use Visio for that. I never tried it before. Do you think that might work?
Hi John,
First this forum is for the Dynamics 365 augmented reality product called Guides. Are you asking about 2d level layout design for use in a Guide? (kinda got my curiosity piqued)What ever the reason, Sketchup Suite has a specific floor plan layout software called Sketch Up Layout.
Always glad for your comments on the forum (thanks for the SketchUp suggestion). This thread dates back to 2019 and the original solution of Layout no longer applies - it has been retired as a product. SketchUp would be a good avenue of investigation for customers needing these capabilities.
For clarification.
There used to be a Microsoft AR product call Layouts, as Dave points is no longer available from Microsoft. Trimble, which owns Sketchup has the Sketchup suite. That suite includes the product Sketch (3d modeling) and "Sketchup Layout" which is specifically 3d to 2d floor layout program. Technically they call it 2d documentation now but its original marketing term was "Sketchup Layouts". This layout program is still available
