Different file paths in DYNAMICS.SET file when using Installation package

Posted on by 30

Hello,

When I install Dynamics GP 2018 using an installation package I created, I get a bunch of different file paths in my DYNAMICS.SET file.

The ones that don't have GP2018 don't work, because the folder "GP" doesn't exist. I've recreated the package a few times with all the defaults, and this is how it installs each time.

If I just run the setup.exe file, and use the defaults, everything is "GP" and works fine.

    Hi,

As Bill & David confirmed, this is a reported bug already since the release of the new 'GP Next' version which was build ontop of the previous GP 2018, and somehow someone in Q&A didn't tested the Deployement Package feature.. I reported the bug almost immediately when "GP Next" was released, but the promise it would fixed in 18.2 felt short..

What I'm surprised however is that you get a mix of GP folder path.. with the main dictionary in GP2018 and the FORMS & REPORTS in "GP"..

I had experienced that even when you specify in the Deployment Package building path both "GP", it would end up both as "GP2018"..

Well that is great news, thank you!

Because i'm going to get asked, is there anywhere I can verify that?

Thanks to both Dave and Richard for jumping in on this and digging up the details needed.

Good news is that the process you were working on would work if the application did not have a challenge.

Keep in touch and keep posting.

This is a reported bug and will be corrected in the next release of GP which will be GP 18.3.xxxx. This is scheduled to be released sometime in October of 2020.

I'm the one that created the file, and I have recreated it multiple times ensuring that the paths were all "GP" and not GP2018.

It makes no difference and sets the folder to GP2018 everytime, and the .SET file is always the mix of file paths.

If this is a bug and there is a fix, i'd love to know how to fix it.

I think this might be a bug from when the version numbers where changed from GP 2018 (v18.0) to just GP (v18.2).

I would contact the person who created your GP package file. As Bill mentioned it is very common to have the program dictionaries located locally and the forms and reports dictionaries located on a network share. However in your case in appears to have the program dictionaries in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics\GP2018 while the forms and reports are in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics\GP\Data. This may be the result off a little bug in the GP package creation that uses the GP 2018 folder regardless of what you tell it to do. The fix right here is to set the paths to be all GP\Data.

I will be installing Cogsdale on top of it, but that's not being installed yet at this point.

I just installed the defaults that are checked off when you install GP - I don't enable any of the other features or anything in the install.

So, in addition to the core modules are you installing any 3rd party apps?  Any of the tools, or just the core Dynamics GP modules.

Just setting up my 'sandbox server' and will be trying to duplicate the problem here.

Just a note so others can see and maybe offer a suggestion:

This is a brand new install, not an upgrade of an old version on the machine.

If I install the software using the ,msi I built using the software packaging tool built into Dynamics GP, the software installs to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Dynamics\GP2018. I've tried specifying this path with .msi switches and that, but it always installs to GP2018. The issue is that the DYNAMICS.SET file has file paths for the above, but also C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Dynamics\GP - This directory doesn't exist, so the FORMS and REPORTS pieces are never actually installed.

If I manually install it using setup.exe and all that, everything installs to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Dynamics\GP" just fine.
