Migrate Dynamics Finance from on-prem to cloud

Hi.

I have found documentation about relying on LCS to move Dynamics CRM from on-prem to online. Is there such capability for Dynamics for Finance? We will start a new Finance implementation in the upcoming months and for a number of reasons the client needs it to be done on-prem and only then take it to online.

In any case, what we would really want to avoid is to have to run a data migration from Finance on-prem to Finance online a few months after running the data migration from the legacy system to Finance on-prem.

Thanks for any input on it.

    Hello,

There should be no problem moving your DB from onprem to cloud. The codebase is the same.

There are a few things to keep in mind, encrypted data will likely need to be regenerated, certain tables will need to be cleaned up (file references for example). These are just a couple that come to the top of my mind. I think one of our SA published an article on carrying out DB movements from onprem to cloud and I can dig it up if you want.

To summarize, if what worries you is the fact you will have to do code or data upgrade then don’t worry about it because it’s compatible. Just need to cleanup some stuff before making the move.

get your on prem DB to sandbox yourself and then could request MS DSE for one time movement from sandbox to production

    Hi Roque Daudt,

You can migrate your On-Premise finance and operations database to Cloud by simply following below steps:

    1. Deploy your custom code package (if exists and optional) in cloud.

    2. Follow these links:

    If migrating to DEV: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/fin-ops-core/dev-itpro/migration-upgrade/data-upgrade-2012
    If migrating to Sandbox: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/fin-ops-core/dev-itpro/migration-upgrade/upgrade-data-sandbox

Above links are for upgrade from AX2012 but you can consider it for On-Premise as well. You can ignore code upgrade and AX 2012 data upgrade hotfix.

Also, if your backup size is more than 14.5 GB then Asset library will not support it, in this case you can follow sandbox link for DEV as well and use Azure storage explorer.

If SQLAdmin credentials are not available in LCS then create a Microsoft support ticket and ask them.

Don't forget to prepare SQL database before exporting bacpac. SQL script is mentioned in link.

    Regards,

    Wajahat Mirza

Hi Rahul. Sorry, but I am not clear on your answer. Do you mean asking DSE to move from on-prem production to online sandbox instance?

    Thanks for your input.

    Hi Andre.

This is a public sector client in Canada. They haven't been cleared yet to use the cloud. It may happen in 6 months, 1 year, 2 years... Nobody knows and they made the decision that they won't wait.

    Hi Roque,

What are the reasons to start on-premise?

assuming platform and custom code base is going to same

you can request DSE team for time database movement from sandbox to production

you just to get your on prem data to sandbox and then it gets into production
