Regarding Connecting Power Bi to dyn365 f&o for reporting.

Hi,

I got few questions regarding how shall i connect power bi to dyn365 f&o for custom scenarios reporting.

1). Can i connect to entity store directly from power bi desktop and then publish the corresponding report to my workspace? if yes, how can i do it? Any resource material or video i can follow. Or is it like entity store is only for analytical work space standard reports and few tweaks to the same are allowed by using edit option in the dyn365 analytical worksapce.

2). Is it possible to directly connect the underlying tables(not entities) of dyn365 f&o from power bi? if yes how?

3). I tried connecting to the dyn365 f&o using dynamics 365 (online) connector in pbi, it returns list of tables. Are these the standard tables or the data enitities ? Also, Why i am not able to see few tables corresponding to a workspace like projTable?

3).  Is there any easy way i can get the list of standard entities that correspond to a workspace or a module within dyn365 f&o which i can use for reporting?

4). Advice on which is the best and most appropriate way to connect to dyn365 f&o data from power bi? The client do not have any data warehouse as of yet

    1)docs.microsoft.com/.../author-distribute-power-bi-reports

    2) No.

    3) You can download PBIs from LCS Asset library, open them in power bi desktop and check tables behind.

    4) BYOD is the easiest one as of today docs.microsoft.com/.../export-entities-to-your-own-database

    Hi,

Thanks for answering for my queries.

1).  Further, as you have written that i can download the power bi files from the lcs asset library. if i am not wrong these pbi files would be reporting based on the underlying entity store,am i correct?

2). I do not have access to the lcs asset library as of now so just wanted to clarify that if i download them locally on my machine the tables which i will be seeing will be the entities or the tables.?

3). Also the link you have provided says about connecting to the local entity store database for creating custom direct query reports. Can you provide some information on it ? what should i do to get one? As you have said i cannot connect to the entity store from power bi directly then how is this different?

4). Also is it mandatory to have pbi desktop on the machine on which the local instance of the entity store is hosted. Can't i connect my pbi desktop to the local instance of the entity store db from my laptop?

It should be like 4 topics...

    1)yes

2)you will see SQL tables created by aggregated measurements and dimensions.

3)any tier 1 vm or dev VM has AxDW DB . From UI you need to refresh entity store and it will populate that DB with tables, you rdp to VM, open PBI in desktop and build a report of that tables in AxDW db.

    4) technically yes, you need to open ports on firewall if they are closed, but VM has ordinary SQL server, so nothing special about it. It's just easier to install desktop there than connect to it, but not impossible.
