Use JavaScript to add condition to Business Process Flow

Good afternoon, I'm trying to implement a new request for a business process flow, and not quite sure how to go about it, other than that it probably needs to be done using JavaScript. The scenario is:

In Step 4 of the BPF, a Yes/No is asked. If the Step 4 condition is Yes, then a Subgrid must not be empty, in order for Step 5 to complete.

How can I use JavaScript to check for this Step 4 variable, and prevent Step 5 from completing successfully, if the Subgrid does not have any records, and how can I display an error so the user knows the reason this has happened?

Thank you!
