I have a question regarding creating a new development instance based on production instance

Hi all,

I need some advice so that i do this correct, we have today 1 production instance (Managed) and 1 development instance (unmanaged) customization are done in the dev1 instance and moved to prod as managed solutions. 

The dev1 instance has a lot of errors in it and we have also now added Marketing to the prod instance.  So I want to create a new dev2 instance that is a copy of the production instance and start new solution files on that new dev2 instance and do customization on that instance to then move as new managed solutions to the prod instance?

Is this supported and will i ran into any issues? The new solutions i create on the new dev2 instance should they have the same or create a new publisher so they are separated from the old solutions from the old dev1 instance.. The plan is when the new dev2 instance is up and running to shut down the old dev1 instance.

    Hi Ragnar,

    thank you for your input, my thought was that on the new DEV2 instance create a new Unmanaged Solution Package, and sure some or probably most of the components adding in the the solution will be managed. But probably all managed properties and all entities and components have been set to default can be customized? So will it really be a problem then? I'm just guessing here. Your idea is also a solution i guess however a bit more work to get up and running as most of the configuration of the production instance would be missing in the DEV2 instance..

    any more thoughts?

    Hi

    you can copy an instance to new one, But if you have managed solution on that instance  it will be managed there also, So are you sure you want to have your DEV instance as managed?

    Are you not able to export solution from DEV1 as unmanaged and create new "empty" instance(DEV2) and install unmanaged solution there,  I think you will run in some issues with your managed solution on DEV.
