Unable to delete Asset after installing at 2nd Functional Location?

Posted on by 165

Ran into an interesting issue when deleting assets in Asset Management. I am able to delete assets initially, but after moving them to a new location I am unable to remove them. Shared repro steps & error below for USMF legal entity. Unsure if this is a bug or not, hoping it’s just something on my end.

Repo Steps:

Create two new active assets (can use USMF). Install both to the default location. For both assets, view the event history and it will look similar to this:

Keep the 1st asset as is, and for the 2nd asset install it at any other functional location, such as PP-01. Viewing the history I can see the state change.

However when I go to delete the Asset Installed at PP-01 I get this error… I don’t get any error when I delete the first item I installed only at DEF. I can also install and remove items directly from PP-01, provided I didn't install them elsewhere. It seems that the action of installing at a second location is blocking me from deleting them. The error message is a little unclear to me. “Cannot delete installations which are expired

What does this error actually mean? How can I rectify it so I can delete my asset.

Unable to delete Asset after installing at 2nd Functional Location?
I know I'm late to this one, but for future people experiencing the same issue, an asset can only be installed on one functional location. When you install on a new location, it is automatically removed from its current location.

In order to remove it from a location, you have to install it on another. You can create a new temporary location or install at the location you need it to be.

Hope this helps someone else in need!

Unable to delete Asset after installing at 2nd Functional Location?
    Hi All,

I got the same error and solved it by making the asset inactive and using the Excel Add-in to delete the concerning asset and published the data entity to take effect.
    The asset was then deleted.

    Best regards,

RE: Unable to delete Asset after installing at 2nd Functional Location?

    Hi All,

I ran into exactly the same issue. The only way to get is solved was by changing the data in the back-end database (Table EntAssetFunctionalLocationObject, field ValidTo). In this table multiple lines existed for the object. One for every location.

I'm very unsure if this is a bug or if the user did something wrong. I cannot find anything on LCS. Did you report this to MS ? And what was the response ?

    Thanks,

    Gerard

As Shilpi mentioned, please contact MS support for further assistance if the issue is reproducible.

I replicated your steps in my test environment.

So I created an asset installed it from DEF to a new location and changed the lifecycle state to Ended and then tried to delete it. It gave me the same warning as you saw on your screen.

    • I traced back to all my settings including lifecycle state, model, etc.
    • I created a new functional location without hierarchy and then tried to delete the asset from the new functional location etc. Same warning.

I am assuming it is a bug in which case reporting to  Microsoft will be the next step unless someone else finds something that might have been missed.

I noticed is if I go and check the retired asset in the Asset view pane it doesn't show up in the installed functional location anymore as the lifecycle state is ended.

Interested in seeing other users results.

    Thanks,

RE: Unable to delete Asset after installing at 2nd Functional Location?

Hey Rahul, I am aware that Functional Locations can not be deleted once an asset in installed at them. My issue is deleting the asset. I can delete the asset if it's installed at DEF. But as soon as I move it out of DEF to another location I can't delete it and the error message isn't clear as to why not.

Eventually, an organization will dispose of it's equipment procured years before. How does one do that in Asset management?

RE: Unable to delete Asset after installing at 2nd Functional Location?

    Hey Shilpi,

There are no work orders assigned to the asset or location. The location is of type 'area'. Changing to 'scapped' doesn't allow me to delete the asset.

From the screenshot you have shared it seems that this asset has work orders assigned to it. Is that correct?

You can delete an asset if no maintenance, work order job, fault registrations etc are registered on the asset?

Also, can you check and advise the functional location type the selected location if there are any dependencies? e.g - City - Site - Warehouse?

Can you please check and confirm?

You can try changing the lifecycle of the asset to, example: scrapped,  and then try to delete it.

    Thanks,

    Shilpi

RE: Unable to delete Asset after installing at 2nd Functional Location?

one of the criteria is to carefully consider the structure of your functional locations before you start creating them in Asset Management. If you regret a functional location, you can delete it, provided that it has not yet been taken into use.
