Reusing remainders/leftovers in Manufacturing

Hi
Working with steel whereby the plan is to place plates of steel and lengths of angle iron into the production bins permanently. The BoM specifies the length, width, depth required and BC calculates the quantity required and thus costed correctly on BC with the remainder being left in the Production bins. Will BC automatically record the remainder as being left in the bin? We have no wish to transfer the remainders back to bin locations; they will be left in the Production bins and can be used again for future production orders as in many cases there would be enough material in a remainder to be used again. Will this strategy work in practice or would there be issues with tracking inventory quantities, or other problems, etc?

    Hope this might be helpful:

No, Business Central will NOT automatically record remainders as usable inventory in the production bins without intervention.

Your strategy will lead to issues:

    • Inventory Inaccuracy: BC will consume the full quantity from the original bin (as per the Production Order Component Lines). The physical "remainder" left in the production bin will not be reflected in BC's inventory system.
    • Costing Problems: The remainder's cost won't be tracked, and future production orders won't correctly reflect using this "free" material.
    • Planning Issues: MRP/MPS won't "see" these remainders, potentially ordering more material than needed.

To make this work in BC:

You need a process to return the remainder to inventory (even if to the same bin location) using a Warehouse Adjustment or Consumption Journal (with a negative entry) after the production order is completed. This creates an Item Ledger Entry for the remainder, making it visible and usable for future orders. This isn't automatic.

By default, when a Production Order consumes an item. Based on my one of the past implementation with created Bin(Example Remaining or Leftover) in Production location and adjusted monthly or quarterly.

Hi, This is somewhat similar to cut-to-length items. Hopefully the following discussion can give you some hints.

    Thanks.
