As shown in the image attached, when closing the Task tab (clicking the x, or Save and Close), USD displays the Search Contact tab. How can I have the Contact tab be displayed after closing the task tab? This seems like a window navigation rule, but not really sure if this is achievable via window nav rule.
Create an action of type close. And associate this action with the search hosted control. As soon as you are done with the search it will automatically close and will only display the search result.

Hope I am not too late in answering your question. For all the Hosted Controls there is a Event called "Closing" that triggers when u close the tab. This event will not be available on your hosted control, but you will have to create one with the same name. On this event, you can write any action that you need.
To focus a tab you can create the action below
