How does Increment By, etc work in Workflows?

When setting the Properties of an "Update" step in a workflow, there are the following operators available: Set To, Increment by, Decrement by, Multiply by, Clear.

Set To and Clear are obvious, but for the life of me I cannot figure out how the math operators work.  When you use them what are the factors in the equations?  If you are in Field A and you select Multiply By, it's multiplying what by what?

Thanks for help in clarifying this functionality.
