Site-wise master planning. Is it feasible?

Hi All,

We are working on Dynamics AX 2012 R2 manufacturing implementation and we are having a roadblock on site-wise Master planning? Is it possible to do site-wise master planning in AX? We had tried some steps like filtering through the item coverage group but it seems that this approach is not working if the item coverage has multiple lines as system is only considering the first line (item is shared by more than 1 site, so item coverage of the item is setup per site). Anyone who encountered site-wise master planning requirement and how did you go about it? Thanks!

To do this you run it for all and filter the results, that is the advice of Microsoft. You "can" do it, but the routine is not build for it so you can create inconsistencies. The system has a set process of running through the net requirements by low level code pooling demand and supply etc. So if you filtered on one coverage group and the parent was another the parent may create demand for the component but you have filtered out the parent so there is no known demand for the component, that sort of thing.

Why do you want to do it and where is it in the process is the real question.

    Hi Steven,

    Thank you.

Our sites are independent from one another. Each planner from each site is currently having his own master plan and the plans are not dependent of the other sites. Also, each planner from each site runs master planning in different schedules.

These sites shares the same item master but basically have separate formulas and routes. Each site has also that customer-vendor relationship in terms of items which are produced in one site and consumed by the other site.

We can proceed with running the master plan for all but I think it would be too heavy as you would be running MP for 3 sites per run and you have to run it 3 times all in all for the 3 sites (this is assuming that each site will have separate schedule of MP runs). That is why we trying to explore on the options of site wise MP.

Can you share how to possibly do the site-wise MP? We can further test and explore on its effects.

    Thank you.

Running it once for all three sites would be more efficient than running it three times for three sites, especially if there was an overlap in the timing of the running.

To do this you would need to filter on the table holding the storage dimensions, I cannot remember which one from memory because I would not do it, but you need to find the right table, but you need to add it to the select criteria which again means you will hit potential issues in the suggestions as AX filters out elements in some calculations but not in others.

    Hi Dennis

Apologies had to rush off to the day job this morning! The last time I looked at this properly was on AX2009 (from that experience my advice is simply to run for all and filter) and the table structure and routines have changed, looking at the selections I thought previously I did this off the dimension number (the internal reference for the dimension combination) and the inventory requirements table. The issue with this is that it could calculate nothing from the coverage group trigger because there was no inventory requirement.

Looking at it today I cannot get that to work, it either brings nothing in or everything in (simple test with mixed demand at two warehouses). The tables and routines have changed and looking at the other tables and trying a few I dont even think it is possible to create the filter as standard anymore, which thinking about it is a good way to enhance  your own recommendation of not filtering the run!!

Sorry but I dont even think it is possible these days, but if you find a filter that you think works let us know.
