Want to edit XML of SSRS rdlc report

Hello,

There was field in Dataset which was removed (from tmp table and dp class as well) and now if I build the project it gives error "Field token [FieldName].value is invalid. Could not find the identifier". I figured out there was text box that was referencing that field so I removed that box off the design but there is still one place somewhere in design that is referencing that field that I cannot find. The report is not deploying just because of this one error.

I am wondering if there is a way I can open the xml of this rdlc for edit find the field and delete the instance from there ? I am unable to locate rdlc file on disk and in VS the report always open in Design mode there is no option of view code or open in xml mode.

    Hi Samy,

On your report design, if you press Ctrl + F, and write your dataset's field name it will take you to the location in RDL XML where this field is being used. From there, you can see which textbox is referring to that field and then you can delete that textbox from your design to remove the errors.

Please verify and let me know if you have further queries.

    Thanks,

    Baber.

Yes I already did this and found on text box id and deleted that text box from the design BUT there is one other place in xml it looks like its under the <visibility> node of some <TablixRowHierarchy> that I con not find in my design.

Check the parent node of the <TablixRowHierarchy> which should be <Tablix> and that can tell you the tablix name on which this expression is being used.

I suspect the build outputs rdl and rdlc files to temp folder at a path similar to C:\Users\[Your_Login_Here]\AppData\Local\Temp so you can try searching that folder to see if you can find it.  Then search the contents to see if you can find the reference to the unwanted field.

Also, if you export the report from AOT, inside the .xpo file for the report, you should be able to find the rdl for the report inserted into that file.  The rdl section usually starts about half way through the file and goes almost to the end.

    Hope this helps.

normally as you build the report in Visual Studio, it should provide you list of all the errors and warnings. This should be done. after refreshing Data Sources on Visual Studio.

Tried the following this morning and it worked for finding the rdlc file for a precision design.

Open the report in visual studio,

right click on the design and choose edit.

Use the find in files command to search for a substring of an expression that is in the report such as "Parameters!".  You get a list of lines in the rdlc file that contain the expression and can double click those lines to open the rdlc file in Visual Studio.

    Hope this helps,
