Import database to Sandbox

Hi, I am working on AX data upgrade to D365FO and in this regards need some help from the experts.

I have successfully upgraded the AX 2012 database to D365FO in the cloud-hosted development environment, and it’s running correctly. Now we want to move the upgraded D365FO database from the cloud-hosted development environment to the Sandbox environment (which is Microsoft managed environment).

Can anyone let me know the options we have to do this database movement? I already tried the bacpac option but it’s not working because the LCS project type is AX 2012 Upgrade and it won't work as per documentation.

Thanks

Another point as consideration: Have you evaluated the option to start with a new database and move configuration and opening balances only? You then have the option to do a lot of reconfiguration to enable new features in the most optimal way. Also, when migrating all historical data, the database consumption will reach the entitled database capacity very quicky, or you might have an overrun already directly.

    Hi M.Nauman Rashid,

Consider using DMT to migrate Master and opening balances and also make sure data is clean before moving to D365 FO UAT environment. The data migration activity may take couple of iterations depending on the UAT testing. You can also have another environment only for configurations (Gold environment). So before each iteration, refresh UAT with the Gold environment and then perform data migration using DMT.

    Hi Andre,

Thanks for your response. Yes, i did read the next documentation page and have below questions:

    1. Do i need to upgrade AX database again for Sandbox from scratch. As i already did once for D365 development environment and fixed all the issues which occurred during the process.

    2. If yes, then what will be the source SQL environment and database in this case? The cloud-hosted development environment with upgraded D365 database will be the source OR the legacy AX 2012 database will be the source in this case.

And yes we started with a new database in D365FO but we don't need opening balances in this case because we want to move all data including historical data from AX 2012 to D365FO database in Sandbox and then in Production.

    Hi Sridhar,

So you mean in this case, we only have an option of DMT to move the data from Dev to UAT. Right? If that is correct then what will be the source environment and db in this case?

Asking this because if i connect the live AX DB then migration will not work straight forward and will give the error which i encountered during the data upgradation process for cloud-hosted dev environment. So which environment and database should be the source in this case?

    Thanks for your guidance.

    Hi M.Nauman Rashid,

The source will be you AX 2012 and destination will be D365 FO Sandbox environment.
You can configure the source and destination in Data Migration Tool and map data entities between AX 2012 and D365 FO Sandbox environment. The DMT tool creates data package which you can use in D365 FO to import data.

Also consider moving only opening balances instead of all the transactions into D365 FO environments.

    Regards,
    Sridhar Narayanan

    Hi Sridhar,

So it means i have to use the AX 2012 database and not the upgraded one which i did on D365 dev environment, Correct? then in this case, do i need to fix all the issues again which occurred during the data upgrade process on dev environment (which were related to some indexes, SP and field name issues etc.)?

    Hi M.Nauman Rashid,

I believe that your D365 FO environment is updated with latest code including your customization and sync is completed.
In case if the UAT environment is not updated with latest code base, you apply the latest package and then perform data movement AX 2012 to UAT.

    Sridhar Narayanan
