I am sending a mail merge letter to a selection of leads. How can I add an activity to each lead so it shows that a letter has been sent to them? I thought this might be possible through quick campaigns but I cannot work it out.

When a Quick Campaign runs or a Campaign Activity as part of a Campaign gets distributed, then for each audience member (depending on your audience type this can be Accounts / Contacts or Leads) respective Activities will be created and related to the audience member. Emails can be sent directly upon distribution. The timeline of the audience member should show a reference of the activity - if then the activity could be created.
There are also several checks made that include whether the audience member has a valid address for the activity type (like email), whether the specific channel is allowed for communication in the contact preferences, and if used whether the amount of maximum communication in a timeframe has already been reached. If a communication could not be sent then a respective failure will be recorded on the quick campaign or campaign activity.
