There is a problem with the server

Hi

I have spent approximately half of my AX career struggling with the following issue:

0044.Screenshot-2019_2D00_09_2D00_20-at-12.24.04.png

Multiple iisreset commands, VM restart, sync, etc does not work.

However, I have been able to find a solution - open a table browser from VS. Then the problem magically disappears.

My question is - what is the cause of this? And how can an action like opening a browser from VS fix it? It does not make sense to me.

I usually get it when I restart a VM. And time and again it can be fixed with the method described above.

Thanks for your attention

    Hi Pete,

There are various reasons for having this generic error message. Have you looked at system log files for a possible explanation?

This happens when the iisexpress is down.

You can check if it's running by looking at the tray, if it's there it's running, otherwise you will need to start it.

One thing that starts the iisexpress for sure is opening the table browser from within VS.

But you can also achieve that using the "Restart IIS Express" option from the D365 menu on VS:

On your VM iisexpress might be stopped and IIS as well.  When you open table browser iisexpress is started thats why you dont see same problem again. What PU version you are on ? I remember this was an issue long time ago t but with new 10.x VM deployed from LCS , I dont  encountered  such a problem.

Thank you all for the responses.

André - I do not know where to look at the system log files... And then I will have to wait till I get the issue again. I know it is a general error. I posted because I get it quite often and as I described - nothing is really wrong and the solution does not make sense.

Pedro - It is a local VM, so from what I understand, it is not running on iisexpress. (I do not have the "restart IIS Express" option in VS.) And then the iis is running. I mentioned that multiple iisreset commands does not fix the issue. As a side note - opening the browser from the IIS manager (where the iis is in a running state), produces the same error.

Sukrut - As mentioned above, the IIS is running. This is on the latest package updates. The last case was actually during the upgrade to PU29. The technical guy was taking a long time upgrading my VM. And then I went to take a look - he was struggling with this issue. Which I fixed with mentioned solution in OP.

    Hi Pete,

You can have a look at the Event viewer. There is a section with Application logs. You can then browse to Dynamics (via Microsoft main node).

    Thanks André.

I have been avoiding the event viewer for a long time. I will keep it in mind next time I get some sort of funny issue. I have a few questions about it, but once I get there I will post a new thread.
