Hi,

I´m planning to move to GP2018 R4... but I would like to know... Is it possible to copy/migrate the users from GP2015 to GP2018? or Do I need to create them manually?

Regards

Julia

If you are upgrading GP 2015 to GP 18.4 on the same server, everything you need for SQL/GP will be included in the upgrade process.

If you are migrating to a new server, you'll need to do a few additional steps to prepare the SQL Logins.  (I always use this as an opportunity to drop old users before the upgrade/migrate.)

How to transfer an existing Microsoft Dynamics GP, Microsoft Small Business Financials, or Microsoft Small Business Manager installation to a new server that is running Microsoft SQL Server

Lisa... with this done, I can copy tables to have all the user security in GP, the users with their assigned roles... correct?

Are you doing an in-place upgrade to GP 18.4 or are you migrating to a new server and then upgrading?

I'm going to reimplement in GP2018 with beginning balances, in the same server we will have  GP2015 (historical) and GP 2018, we will have two installations of SQL.

    Thanks

Why have two instances of SQL and two instances of GP. If it is solely for historical data I would look into the Company Data Archive product from Professional Advantage.

If you are happy with GP system-level configuration (users, security, etc.), I would think the "easiest" method would be to follow the new server configuration to capture the SQL Logins, restore the DYNAMICS database to the GP 18.4 SQL instance, run the Clear Companies script, and then upgrade to GP 18.4 (via the interim steps required to get from GP 2015 to GP 18.4).

[If there were deeper issues with the DYNAMICS system level information, and you are comfortable with SQL, there are ways to copy in the user information to the new instance, but that would not work well to walk through in this type of forum.]

If you are migrating server, the quickest and best solution is to use GP Power Tools Database Validation feature to recreate all the users for you. It will fix all the SQL Logins and Database Users and their SIDs to be fully functional again. It can create the password (with encryption) using a provided password or generating random passwords. It can also send emails to the users with their new password which can be set to force them to change on next login.
