Microsoft Point of Sale 2009 disconnects from database server more and more

I am still running Microsoft Point of Sale 2009 and more and more often, while in the middle of a transaction the client machine loses connection to the data base and displays the message "Connection has been lost with the database and program has to close"     Most often this happens when we are in the middle of an invoice, but I have seen the message on the screen more frequently when we open in the morning.    I have checked the cables, replaced the switch but nothing seems to help.    Any ideas.
