When opening a D365 Finance & Operations project in Visual Studio, I get the following error:
 

There was an error reading metadata…

Error HRESULT_E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component.


 

What are the common causes of this issue, and what is the recommended way to fix it?

    The error indicates you have a custom objects (class, table...) not well formatted; you could be missing a closing curly bracket.
    Is this the first time you are opening that project on VS studio? You can re-open the project, create a fresh one and add your objects, this will help identify the exact corrupted  element(s).
