Power BI for Dynamics 365 CRM

Looking at creating some dashboards via Power BI to display within Dynamics 365.  I've been able to get the data into the desktop version, but am struggling in the online version.

My questions: Do you need a Power BI Pro license to create custom reports and dashboards that integrate with Dynamics 365?

Will every user within the CRM also need a Power BI Pro license to view the custom reports?

Is there any way to customize the existing sales analytics tab to accommodate custom entities and forgo the above work?

Thank you in advance for your help!

    Hello izakc,

    Please see:

    docs.microsoft.com/.../service-features-license-type

To do any type of collaboration or sharing (sharing report or dashboard, or create a app work-space in Power BI) , you need to have a pro license.

My questions: Do you need a Power BI Pro license to create custom reports and dashboards that integrate with Dynamics 365?

    - You can use Power BI Free to create reports and dashboard to integrate with Dynamics 365 as long as you are the only person consuming your reports. However, if you want to share a Power BI report to a coworker, both you and your coworker need a pro license.

Will every user within the CRM also need a Power BI Pro license to view the custom reports?

    - Users will need a pro license to view reports from app work-space or other users' shared reports.

Is there any way to customise the existing sales analytics tab to accommodate custom entities and forgo the above work?

    - By existing sales analytics tab, do you mean the out-of-box Dynamics 365 dashboard? Yes, you can create/update Dynamics 365 charts&dashboards for custom entities, https://crmbook.powerobjects.com/system-administration/customization/charts-dashboards-2/

If you mean Sales Analytics for Dynamics 365 from Power BI app workspace, we can't customize or edit that as the publisher is Microsoft.

However, Microsoft does publish them as content pack, you can download them from below link, the one you want to look for is Sales Manager.pbix    This would be a good starting point to customise your own version. Also, please note, pbix file only contains Power BI reports not dashboard.

Hi Abby - thank you for the answer! I'm still having trouble with your answer to the first question and cannot find a way to make Reports and Dashboards via Power BI free online.  Do you have any resources that you recommend?

Abby - it looks like this still uses power BI desktop.  If  I create a report on the desktop version, will it be available to view in my own online version of power bi?

    Hi izakc,

Power BI Desktop is tool to create reports.

There is a button in Power BI Desktop to Publish to Power BI Online, to publish your report into powerbi.com

If you use Power BI free, I think you can only publish into your own workspace.

If you get Power BI pro license, you can create app workspace and publish into there which is more proper and maintainable.

You can edit reports in powerbi online directly. It is a personal preference. Personally, I find Power BI Desktop easier to use and more customization options. However, sometimes preview features come into online version first.

In Dynamics 365, you can add Power BI Dashboard. Power BI Dashboards can only be created in powerbi.com not Power BI Desktop.
