Do we have to upgrade to SP2 before upgrading Dynamics AX 4 to AX 2012?

We are in the process of planning an upgrade from Ax 4.0 SP1 to AX 2012 R2 (CU 7).

In the Upgrade guide Microsoft "recommends" that you install the newest service pack (For AX 4.0, this would be SP2.)

The client and other internal departments are not to keen to upgrade to SP2 first, mostly because of time constrains.

Does anyone have experience upgrading Ax 4.0 SP1 to Ax 2012?

If we decide not to upgrade to SP2, what kind of issues problems can we expect later in the upgrade process?

Thanks for any advice!

Tina

As it is recommended in Upgrade guide, we must do so..

if you upgrade from AX 40 SP1 to AX 2012...

Code upgrade will not have much issues...

but Standard Data upgrade tool (source to target) will not work properly and you will have data lose... which is very big risk

and you need to do the manual data upgrade, which will be time consuming

If you consider that you will not need all data from AX 40 SP1 to AX 2012

    then you should go ahead..

else if all data is also needed to be upgraded then I say you should first upgrade to AX 40 SP2

Please let me know if you need support for AX 40 SP2, I can help you.

    Hi Nitesh,

Thank you very much for your answer.

To add detail to my question:

    • No code update required (we've already done that), only data.
    • All data have to be migrated.
    • We have to use  Data upgrade tool, no manual update. (Client request)

So I supposed based on the bullets we will have to upgrade to SP2...

Yes for your scenario, you must have to upgrade to AX40 SP2..

otherwise data update will not succeed.

Thank you very much for you answer, I understand.

We'll probably still have to investigate and see how it goes on SP1. Unfortunately the client is shortsighted and would prefer that we spend more time working on our copy of production, rather than upgrading their actual production system.
