Create one dynamic segment in D365 Marketing, that contains both leads and contacts and avoid duplicates in that segment to be later used in a journey to send emails.

I can email to leads/ contacts by creating segments for each.

This is crucial as we have substantial number of leads and contacts in the CRM. - if you create two customer journeys for leads/contacts then I am concerned that when a person is listed as a contact as well as a lead, that he will receive two emails.

I need to be able to create one dynamic segment that contains both leads and contacts (and also future ones that are added). Then I can create one journey that sends an email to this segment. This journey will also need to be able to automatically make sure that an email is only sent once to an email address (even if this email is associated with a lead AND a contact or if one lead/contact is in the segment multiple times)

    Hi partner,

You should use real-time marketing segment, Right?

Outbound marketing segment can only add contacts, and real-time marketing segment can add leads or contacts, but it can't contain both leads and contacts in the one same segment.

In real-time marketing segment, you can Individually manage segment members with inclusions and exclusions:

You mentioned that you are concerned that when a person is listed as a contact as well as a lead, that he will receive two emails.

So you can make a marker for lead/contact records with the same email address, create two segments for lead and contact respectively, and then use this marker to exclude them in one of the segments.

With RTM journey you can add exclusion segments. People in this segment will not be able to enter the journey. See learn.microsoft.com/.../real-time-marketing-segments only this works for similar object (leads / leads versus contacts / contacts). As mentioned combining leads and contacts in one segment is not possible.

As this sounds to be a recurring issue, i would investigate a solid solution for this. Think why a person can be a contact and a lead. Is this business related or bad data management. If it is business related, think about developing a power automate that flags every contact that also exists as a lead.

Then you can send to all leads, and create a segment that excludes all contacts with the Lead flag.

If this helped you, I'd appreciate it if you'd mark this as a Verified Answer, which may in turn help others as well.

    Best Regards,
