Dynamics Balance Sheet P&L Issue - Please Assist

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

We are the accountants for a client who use Microsoft Dynamics.  We do not know the year or version.  We cannot seem to get any guidance for find literature on the following issue:

  • 09/30/2016 year closed properly.
    • In the subsequent period, the retained earnings is overstated by the Net Income from 09/30/2016 (as if the net income was closed to this account twice)
    • In the subsequent period, the period’s earnings on the balance sheet are understated by the Net Income from 09/30/2016
      • However, the Profit and Loss for the subsequent period is showing the proper Net Income for the Subsequent Period

Is there a likely reason why this is happening, and how do we go about fixing it?

Example:

  • Net Income for 09/30/2016 was $50,000 and Retained Earnings started at $100,000.
  • Profit and Loss from 10/01/2016 - 06/30/2017 shows an accurate $30,000
  • Balance Sheet at 06/30/2017 shows Retained Earnings as $200,000 instead of $150,000.  It also shows earnings as ($20,000) as opposed to $30,000.

How can the Profit and Loss Net Income be accurate, and the Balance Sheet Retained Earnings and Net Income both be off by the prior year's Net Income?
