Increasing length of Customer requisition EDT (CustPurchaseOrder)

Posted on by 288
We need to ensure that we can accommodate 60 characters in most customer requisition fields, across various forms such as shipment, sales orders, BOL, etc., in D365FO. Given the widespread use of this field, do you think it's worthwhile to increase the character limit from 20 to 60? The alternative option would be to create a custom field, which would require a significant amount of work and customization. Could you please outline the potential risks, particularly related to increasing the character limit of the CustPurchaseOrder EDT?

    Hi,

Here are some considerations to take into account:

    1. Database storage: Increasing the field length will consume more database storage space. This could result in increased database size, impacting performance and backup/restore processes.
    2. Data consistency: The field is used in existing systems and custom reports. If the field length changes, corresponding modifications and adjustments may be required in these systems and reports to ensure data consistency.
    3. Integration and migration: Increasing the field length can introduce complexity in integration with other systems or during data migration processes.
    4. User interface: Increasing the field length may pose challenges in displaying and inputting the field in the user interface. The interface needs to accommodate the new field length.
    Best regards,
    Kevin

    Hi Nastaran,

A similar question was discussed here:

Changing the EDT string size, means it will affect all places that uses it. So if that's your intention and you need to increase it then go ahead.

If you would like to only increase it in few tables, then I think there is no need to create a custom field. Create a new EDT that extends the base EDT and change the EDT on the fields of those tables.

    Thanks,
    Layan Jweihan
