Backup and Restore NAV DB

Hello,

I have a question about NAV DB Backup and Restore.

If I backup SQL DB, do I need to backup Development Environment?

If I restore SQL DB, do I need to restore Development Environment?

We have a Production System and a Test System. If we want to backup Production System DB and migrate data to Test System, do we need to consider the Development Environment?

Not necessarily unless you are using it.

    Allen,

What do you mean by Development Environment ? do you mean the objects or development database.

If you take a SQL backup it includes the data and the object changes, so if you restore production DB on Test System then you are overwriting everything including the objects and the data you have in the TEST system.

If you are using SQL backup/restore option then what I recommend is always take the backup of  all the objects from the TEST database before restore and once you restore the production, take the objects backup and re-import them using development environment that way your pending modifications you have in  the TEST will be restored.

I hope this answer your question.

    Hi Allen,

You do no need to do backup / restore Development Environment, if you use SQL DB backup option.

Further, if you want to restore the Production System to Test System, it will completely overwrite the entire database (Including Data & Development Environment Objects).

Hence, please ensure that, objects in Production & Test Environment are in sync., before you restore.

As mentioned by Suresh and Vishal, SQL backup will include not only the data, but all the objects of your database, so you can continue the developments using Development Environment when you just restore the backup.

If you want to be sure that the objects will not be modified and you would need to import to Test System only the data, you should not use SQL restore backup (as it will overwrite your objects in Test System), but consider alternative sources of import, e.g. RapidStart service.
