D365 FO on-prem OR Dynamics AX

We are medium size entity and at present using Dynamics GP and is fulfilling our requirement except for few missing feature in GP.

Now we are looking to upgrade to D365 FO or Dynamics AX. We are not interested to go on cloud at any stage.

Please suggest whether we switch to D365 FO or Dynamics AX purely on premises installation. Suggestion is required based on available functional feature in both of these.

    Hi Farukh,

Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations is a newer version compared to AX 2012. Note that AX 2012 will be end of life. See also this site: support.microsoft.com/.../search;alpha=ax%202012&Filter=FilterNO

Microsoft is investing in Microsoft Dynamics 365 continuously. Developing customizations for Dynamics 365 is based on extensions which is better for applying updates.

You haven't mentioned which features are important for you. In my opinion, the future support and extension options are more important than possibly a feature which might not be supported on one of these versions.

    Hello Farukh,

Here is a high level overview article that  might give you some ideas about the differences between the 'old' (AX) and the 'new' (D365FO) version.

Not sure if you can still get AX implemented because - as Andre mentioned - it's lifecycle will end iin the near future.

    Best regards,

    Ludwig

Dynamics AX can't be purchased anymore.

The mainstream support for Dynamics AX2012 R3 ends in October 2021 and the extended support ends in October 2023.

Even if you are not "interested" in going to cloud, you should still consider it. Implementing D365FO in cloud is much simpler than on premises. And most cases also cheaper. Microsoft says that you should go cloud if you don't have very strong reasons to not go. And I would not count "not interested" as a strong reason. Do you have some business reasons for wanting to stay on prem?

We have not reliable internet; further we see cloud recurring cost is much higher than on-prem.

For any customization we have to look forward to Microsoft.

Data is not available at our premises.

    Hi Farukh,

The internet connection is a valid argument.

For cost, you have to consider all costs like hardware acquisition, software licenses for Windows, SQL server and more but also education of own system administrators. Probably you did it already.

What is not correct in your understanding are the next two points:

    - Customizations are not managed by Microsoft. You can do all yourself; except the deployment on the production environment.

    - Data is available. You can create own backups and also use BYOD to get the data you require for e.g. reporting
