Development License

Posted on by 315

I am looking to get into the development of Dynamics 365. I know they have two versions (on premise and Cloud), and within those versions they have it divided among the different uses (sales, F&O, etc.).

Using Dynamics NAV for example, if you wanted a developer license you had to pay a nice hefty fee of about 8-25 thousand dollars and you would be granted a certain number of privileges based upon the license you paid for.

How does this work in Dynamics 365?

  • Is there a monthly fee for developers and different tiers allowing different levels of access? Or is there a way to pay a flat fee?
  • Is the best way to enter the Dynamics 365 developer side with the Microsoft Action Pack or with MSDN? Will I get a full copy of 365 with either one of these?
  • What about setting up a test environment with Dynamics 365 over the span of 12 months? I know there are some 90 trials, but what is the best way and lowest cost to set up a development environment for 12 month project?
  • Other than Visual Studio, are there any other tools that will be required?

Thanks

Yes, Channel Integration Framework (CIF) is available in trial version. Acquire it from the link below - appsource.microsoft.com/.../mscrm.d365ciframework

    Hi

Do you know if apps like channel integration framework are available in the trial version?

The responder mentioned that we can create a trail environment every 90 days but if CIF mentioned above is not part of the trial, what is the best option forward?

    Will appreciate your response

    RE: Development License

It is an interesting question and a pretty generic one :) Let me try to answer this. First of all, am not sure how licencing used to work with NAV or for that matter how is it right now ( I think NAV features have now been merged with Dynamics 365 Business Central edition, correct me if I'm wrong here).

    Having said that,

    • Dynamics 365 doesn't require any developer licence.
    • As you already know, we can setup a max 90 day trial environments where all the POCs, feature exploration, etc can be done and this is how we usually do it. Every 90 days we spin a new environment and do our research on it.
    • I don't see a need for 12 month trial instances
    • If you have an MSDN license then I think there is an On-premise product key available which you can utilize for all the research but since it is on-prem, I would highly recommend you skip it instead stick to online version.
    • As far as the tools are concerned, you just require Visual Studio, SDK and other stuff are freely available and you can refer to the links I shared below

I have tried to compile some resources for you which are really good to get you started.

Am not sure if I have answered all of your queries but let me know if you need any further information.
