W-2 Magnetic Media

Hi;

Is anyone printing W-2s through GP Dynamics and using W-2 Magnetic Media to file their taxes electronically? Our VAR recommended using Greenshades (which we did last year) but our payroll and A/P departments want to produce the W-2s and 1099s in house this year. I have not found much on this topic through Customer Source. If you are using this funtionality have you been successful or what issues have you encountered? Thanks!

Hi Elizabeth,

We have several clients who are printing W2s and 1099s through Dynamics GP and also using the MS Mag Media module to generate the electronic files for the SSA. Many of these clients also use Greenshades to augment the functionality in Dynamics GP; specifically for create electronic files for state W2/wage information and for 1099 information.

Our clients have generally been successful using these products. The main issues we have had are that the W2 and 1099 forms seldom line up right away due to variations in printers, etc. and so some formattting or alignment needs to be done. Also with regard to 1099s, a clean year end is required so that payments show in the proper year (although this is less of an issue in versions 9 and 10). With regard to Greenshades, the software is fairly easy to use. You do need to make sure you have the latest updates installed when you run it and that they have released the formats for your state before you generate the file but overall it's a good product.
