Where can I find a comprehensive list of D365 F&O Data Entities and their loading order?

The Technical Reference Reports do not provide the Unit, Level, and Sequence for loading order. The default import templates are missing many Data Entities that are commonly used in large ERP implementations. There used to be a comprehensive list, but, it has disappeared.

RE: Where can I find a comprehensive list of D365 F&O Data Entities and their loading order?

Hi Andre and thank you for taking the time to respond. Starting with your first paragraph (numbered here):

    1. Yes. Microsoft should provide the loading sequence for ALL Data Entities. Why? Because global companies (like mine) have dozens of projects going on, each one is accessing new Data Entities and the constant search for the right sequence is extremely counter productive. Besides, this is a product Microsoft is offering to the public. That means every conceivable way of using the product will be tried and since Microsoft is pushing everyone to use Data Entities, they should not only be providing the complete technical requirements for the correct way to load data into them, but, to also provide full and in-context field descriptions for every field (which they do not provide). Other similar products DO provide complete SQL ERDs and field definitions. It is a mystery to me why Microsoft does not provide this minimum requirement.
    2. Same here. But, I work on more than a dozen projects and there hasn't been a single one where some new Data Entity isn't showing up.
    3. Yes, I know. But, Microsoft FastTrack consultants typically push consultants to look to the templates for current fields, loading order, etc. The templates have mistakes and these cause problems. This IS a Microsoft responsibility, both to make sure the templates are accurate as well as ensuring that LCS has the latest. I do not give Microsoft a pass on their responsibility for keeping technical information up-to-date. They created this product. If they want to sell and take responsibility for maintaining it, then they need to do a top-notch job.
    4. Yes, I know. Again, this is just giving Microsoft a pass for not doing their job. They do not allow us to mess with the core and take great pains to explain that they have NO responsibility for any customizations that we make. By the same token, then, they must have FULL responsibility for the technical accuracy and functionality of the OTB product.
    5. You definitely have more experience than I do (I have been doing this for 5 years). And, my admiration for your ability to remember the data fields for over 6,000 Data Entities or over 10,000 Tables and their relationships. I cannot.

RE: Where can I find a comprehensive list of D365 F&O Data Entities and their loading order?

    Hi Ron,

To start with your last question. Does Microsoft have the responsibility to maintain something that might be not suitable for the majority? If companies only are interested in moving customers, vendors and open balances, do they need all the templates?

Usually, I start with what information is available from the legacy application. Then I try to find the relevant data entities. I don't need all 2000. In rare situations, I used the templates feature to find some related entities.

Microsoft used the templates in the past for an example to load some demo data, but it was never intended to provide a comprehensive list for implementations. During the years, some entities were replaced with a V2 or V3 version of the entity. Then indeed, you may experience that the templates available on the LCS asset library are not up to date.

During the years, new tables and new entities were added to the application. You might even find some tables where support for data entities are missing or in case when Microsoft added new fields, not in all cases the new fields are available in the data entities.

I can understand your request. As I already had a lot of experience with previous versions of Dynamics AX and the data model, the data entities are relatively easy to me. For non-experienced users, it might be a big puzzle. In the first years of Dynamics 365, I had some struggles with the field names in the entities as they are not always matching the field labels.

RE: Where can I find a comprehensive list of D365 F&O Data Entities and their loading order?

    All,

Thank you for your replies. The issue has nothing to do with moving data from environment to environment. Here are my points summarized:

    1. The default templates are missing many entities and so the loading order for those missing entities are missing. Where do I find the correct loading order?
    2. The default templates have errors in loading order. For example: Party contacts V3 (missing from templates but assume same as Party contacts) is listed as 1, 10, 310 (EU, LE, SE) and Customers (and V2,V3) nowhere to be found. Vendors V3 (only V1 and V2 found) listed as 1, 120, 35. But, for Vendors (in general) trying to load Party contacts V3 before Vendors V3 completely fails because the PartyID for Vendors V3 is not yet known to the system. Same problem if trying to load Party contacts V3 before Customers V3.
    3. Where is Microsoft's responsibility for providing a comprehensive list of Data Entities WITH their correct loading order? The online documentation makes a big deal about how the system is supposed to utilize EU, LE, and SE to facilitate and accelerate data loading, but, with this information missing on many Data Entities, how are we supposed to make use of this "great" feature?

I hope this clarifies my request.

    Hi RonSonntag,

if you need the sequence of entities you should use for the data load I suggest to have a look on the Templates in the data management. In here you can load default templates. The templates are packages of entities. Inside a package the sequence of the entities is predefined. I have very good experience with these templates.

    Hi Ron,

I am not aware of a comprehensive list or description. What might help are a couple of posts that illustrate how to copy things between companies. See e.g. dyntips.com/.../ , www.everythingdynamicsaxbi.com/.../

Hope this helps at least a bit.

    Best regards,

    Ludwig

RE: Where can I find a comprehensive list of D365 F&O Data Entities and their loading order?

    Hi Andre,

I am managing the data migration from legacy systems to D365 F&O. There are many dozens of data entities to import and they have to be done in a specific sequence. I have spent hours looking through Microsoft documentation looking for a comprehensive list of data entities with the Unit, Level, and Sequence defined - however, Microsoft provides no such documentation. All I can find are a few examples with a few representative data entities and some discussion on data import ordering but no comprehensive list of all data entities and their loading order.

Note: I have reviewed the full list of default templates that show many data entities and their Execution unit, Level, and Sequence, but, many of the data entities I have to load are missing from this list (yes, I loaded ALL default templates).

The Microsoft D365 Reference Data (TechnicalReferenceReports_V10_0_9.zip) has the list of all data entities, but, they are missing the required Execution Unit, Level, and Sequence information.

Almost four years ago I ran across a large spreadsheet that had all this information that I think came from Microsoft under the AX2012 R2 moniker - but I cannot find it anywhere on the Microsoft sites.

This is an issue that comes up over and over again and stalls many projects because of the simple lack of technical documentation from Microsoft. If you know where this information is, I would be grateful.

    Thank You, -Ron

    Hi Ron,

What exactly do you mean with a comprehensive list? What do you want to achieve? If it is about moving config data from a staging to another environment, then you can probably better move the whole golden config database.

do you have a question for us to help?

is this a feedback for MS?
