Deployable package: not all objects of package are included

I had this strange situation today, for which I cannot find a solution.

Our setup is the following:

- 2 developers are working on their own virtual machines running Dynamics For Operations and Finance Update 8, we use VSTS for source control.

- A development/build machine hosted on azure, where we build our releases.

- We then apply those releases/deployable packages to other environments.

How I created my deployable package

- did a "get latest version" for all the objects in my package, on the dev machine in the source control explorer

- Then I used the Dynamics 365 > "build models" function in Visual studio, and choose to build all the referenced packages.

- Then I uploaded the deployable package to LCS and applied it to my destination environment.

What is the problem

Today it appeared that all new objects were not in this destination environment, extensions on existing standard tables were in the package.

I did notice the following however:

When building each visual studio solution, there were binary files added to the folder C:\AOSService\PackagesLocalDirectory\<Mypackage<\bin

But then when creating a depoyable package, the complete model is built, and serveral 'netmodulefiles' and others were deleted again.
I can even see those files become a '.delete' file when the model build is running.

What's going on here?

Your help is greatly appreciated

Kind regards

Mathieu

Why exactly aren't you using a build server? It would take a clean environment, download code from VSTS and build it, therefore in a particular dev box would ruin your deployment.

Regarding your dev box, I wouldn't pay too much attention to what's happen in the incremental build. I would focus on whether your source code matches VSTS and what the model build does. (And as mentioned before, I wouldn't create deployable packages there.)

Because my client only has a subscription for 3 environments.

We have a dev environment, which is used to build the packages, and do some primary test by functional consultants. Then there is a real test environment, and an Acceptance for the client.

But honestly I'm seriously considering a real build environment. What is the main difference between the Development and a Build environment in LCS?

The build environment comes contains all the needed scripts for creating a build definition in VSTS and controlling your builds from there. Those aren't included in the dev environment. If you deploy a build topology from LCS to the cloud, it's practically a plug and play type of effort for you.

As I explained, a build server makes a build from scratch every time; you can be sure that all code is coming from VSTS. Dev boxes may be missing latest changes, have local changes that shouldn't be deployed and so on, so you may end up deploying wrong code. Also, if you're building a package in a dev box, you can't use the environment for its purpose, i.e. development.

By the way, I wouldn't do development either in a client T1 sandbox since we've lost admin access there. I usually need quite a few development tools that can't be installed without admin rights.
