EDI testing

I've just picked up support for a client that uses Dynamics AX 2009.  What is the best way to create 940s and receive 945s for testing without affecting inventory?  We really don't have much of a test system for Dynamics.

I've just been creating them manually for testing with the warehouse.

Any hints, tips tricks are appreciated.

    Hi Rotten,

Can you explain what 940s and 945s is? Not everyone is familiar with EDI. If you need to make changes to an existing system, make sure you will get a test environment. Particularly when you are new at this end-user.

940s are EDI documents sent to the Warehouse for Picking/Packing/Shipping. The 945 is an EDI document returned from the warehouse to Dynamics that contains the shipping information including tracking information that is used to create the 856 or Advanced Shipping Notice sent to the customer. This company is a US office for a European based company.  While I have some admin rights, I can't create a complete test environment.

    Hi Rotten,

Thanks for the information. I do think these EDI document would create inventory transactions. If you don't have a test-system, you can try to copy the company in AX2009 and test in the copied company. However this is not best-practice and can lead to incorrect data. I would not recommend doing this. If you do so, make sure you have a backup of the database and do the testing in non-office hours to be able to restore the data when something would be wrong.
